Homemade Marinara Sauce

Canned whole tomatoes make for a speedy base to this great Marinara Sauce Recipe.

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 2 cans whole tomatoes ~70oz total
  • 10-12 cloves garlic roasted
  • 2 bay leaf
  • 4 tsp dried basil
  • 1 cup red wine dry
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tsp oregano
  • 2 tsp dried marjoram
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 2 tsp balsamic vinegar optional

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. 
  • Add onion to hot oil until softened for about 10 minutes
  • Add basil, red wine, honey, oregano, marjoram, salt, black pepper, fennel seeds, and red pepper into the tomato mixture. 
  • Bring mixture to a simmer and cook 35 minutes.
  • Add tomatoes, roasted garlic, and bay leaves to the pot. 
  • Bring the sauce to a boil
  • Reduce to medium-low and simmer mixture for an additional 35 min.
  • (Optional) Stir balsamic vinegar into the sauce.
