Chinese Five Spice Powder recipe
The other day I was making stir fry and I always add a pinch or two of Chinese Five Spice powder to my stir fry dishes because I think this spice mixture just adds a little extra “oomph” and authentic taste. But as I went to my spice cupboard I soon found out that I was all out! But a quick search on the internet found a Chinese Five Spice Powder recipe that I could make myself and luckily I had all the ingredients on hand.

- 1 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
- 1 Teaspoon Ground Cloves
- 1 Teaspoon Fennel Seed
- 1 Teaspoon Star Anise
- 1 Teaspoon Szechwan Peppercorns (I don’t know if the pepercorns I had were Szechwan or not – I just used regular black peppercorns)
- Run all the ingredients in a spice grinder or clean coffee grinder. Or, do it old school and use a mortar and pestle.
Besides adding a pinch to chicken or beef stir fry I also like to make a Chinese meatball stir-fry. To make the meatballs you just take ground turkey (not beef), a little minced garlic, some dried bread crumbs, an egg and a generous pinch of Chinese Five Spice powder. Mix it together and form small meatballs. Cook in a pan till done and add to cooked stir fry veggies and your favorite bottled sauce (we like Teriyaki). Sever over rice. Very kid friendly recipe and the meatballs are fun for the kids to try and eat with chopsticks.
