Nutty Apple Pie Cake

1 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter or margarine
1 egg
1 cup flour
1 tsp. Cinnamon
1 tsp. Nutmeg
½ tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Baking soda
4 Tbsp. Warm water
2 cup apples, pared and diced
½ cup nuts, chopped
whipped cream or ice cream for garnish

Cream sugar and butter until smooth; add egg and beat until fluffy. Stir the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together. Dissolve the soda in warm water and then add the flour mixture alternately with the soda/water to the creamed mixture. Mix until well blended. Stir in the apples and nuts. Turn batter into a buttered 9-inch pie-pan and smooth the top. Bake at 350-degrees for 40-50 minutes, or until the cake tests done. Cut into edges while hot or still warm. Serve each wedge with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream.
