FAQ

This is the WEGMANS forum

Headquartered in Rochester, New York, Wegmans is a privately held, family-owned company, founded in 1916 by the Wegman family. Danny Wegman is CEO, and Colleen Wegman, his daughter, is president. Danny's father, Robert Wegman was chairman of the company until his death at the age of 87 in April 2006.
  • 2005 annual sales of $3.8 Billion
  • 32nd on the 2006 Supermarket News list of the Top 75 Supermarkets based on sales volume.
  • On Forbes' annual list of the “Largest Private Companies in the U.S.,” Wegmans ranks among the top 50 companies.
  • Wegmans operates 71 stores: 51 in New York State, 10 in Pennsylvania, 7 in New Jersey, 2 in Virginia and one in Maryland.
  • Wegmans employs over 35,000 people.
How Wegmans Compares to Other Grocery Stores:

More like a European open-air market: Dazzling displays of fresh produce, artisan breads and other baked goods hot from the oven several times a day. Displays of fresh-caught seafood, meat, deli products and imported cheeses, international foods - plus all the foods and household items usually found in supermarkets.

More choice than possibly any other supermarket chain: More than 70,000 products, compared to an average of just over 40,000 (according to the Food Marketing Institute) in most supermarkets. Take cheese, for example: Wegmans usually has 500 specialty cheeses on hand.

Larger than most supermarkets: (We need room for all that stuff!) Stores run 80,000 to 130,000 square feet in size. Aisles are unusually spacious.

Wegmans offers more customer convenience services and “stores within a store” than possibly any other supermarket chain. Many of Wegmans' stores, though not all, have the following:

· Market Cafés - offering take-out or in-store dining, with seating for 100 to upwards of 200.
· Ready-to-cook entrees in our Meat and Seafood departments
· Bakery - European breads and rolls baked in a brick oven; water-boiled bagels, muffins, pies, cakes, and pastries
· Pâtisserie - an authentic French pastry shop, created by one of Paris' top pastry chefs, Pierre Hermé
· Deli, Cheese Shop - hundreds of meats and specialty cheeses, many imported
· Nature's Marketplace - natural foods, supplements, herbal remedies, and foods for special dietary needs
· Food from around the world - Italian, Asian, Indian, Latino/Hispanic, Kosher, British, and German
· Pharmacy
· Photo Lab - one-hour processing, Picture Maker station that creates photo enlargements, cameras, and film
· Complements – upscale cookware, tableware, and accessories
· Floral Shop; Greeting Cards and Gift Shop
· Cosmetics; Bath and Body products
· Wkids Fun Centers – where kids ages 3 to 8 can play while their parents shop

I have a Wegman's. I'd luv it if people posted their deals. I only go in occasionally b/c it is impossible to not impulse shop there. But sometimes they have good deals. Recently I got canned goods for 25 cents each and their 90% lean ground beef is always 1.99 lb.

They have killer pistachio muffins and cheese bread. Plus their olive bar makes a mean bruscetta topping. Incredible when paired with baguettes from Sam's club cut on a bias and lightly toasted.

And customer service: you'll never find better.

Ours is 30 minutes or more away, but well worth it. I've been surprised that some of their prices are so low...and their clearance/discontinued is AWESOME.

If you are looking for the $1 on entree Kashi peelie, EVERY BOX of Kashi cereal in our store had one.

I was there tonight. We usually just cruise the fresh stuff and not go to grocery but I ended up getting the best deal around on chocolate for my chocolate fountain.

It's funny b/c DH said we could go there for dinner and only spend $22. Fresh crabcakes, a veggie and bread. It's sounds funny to have a date night at the grocery unless you've been to a Wegman's.

I know they are a regional store, would you by any chance be near me? What state are you in?

I wish we had a Wegman's in NC. I am from Rochester, NY, and that was about the only place my mom would shop. We took my sister-in-law up there a few years ago on a visiting trip, and when she walked into Wegman's she thought she'd died and gone to heaven. They really know how to do-up a grocery store in NY!

I moved to GA from Roch. We used to pass about 4 pizza joints just to get their's. Love their garlic pizza and their cakes. Miss them lots.

Now I am very curious to try this store. I just passed the one closest to me today, and it is 30 minutes away. But the next time I am that way I'll have to check it out. Does anyone know if they post their flyers online early? I am a bit out of their mailing area so I've never received a flyer.
