I've used layaway at Walmart a couple of times to hide big Christmas presents from teenage kids.
A friend of mine's dh is the store manager of our Super W/M. He said they use semi-trailers as layaway storage. I can't remember how many trailers he said they had, but I think it was something like 20. No wonder it takes so long for them to find some things. In our low income area they had lots of problems with people defaulting on layaway items (did they just lose any money they had paid down and payments???). Layaway was a huge hassle for the store. So, although I am a bit sorry to see the option taken away, I am not at all surprised.
