It may be a district thing to ask for manager's approval. I know we've had short spans of that here. Mostly, I think cashiers just don't know and are afraid of making a mistake.
Has anyone else gotton the third degree at Walmart lately? I went a few days ago and had 3 comparison ads and my cashier went and asked someone else before doing all 3. And then when I handed her my coupons she turned her light to blinking and went and asked a manager. I think it was because my Gain dish detergent was free. I asked her if they have changed their coupon and comp add policy and she said it's not me it's them.
I drove to another Walmart a few miles away today so that I didn't have to deal with the hassle and got the EXACT same treatment. And yes my ads and q's were legit.

I printed off the walmart ad showing "We'll match the price of any local competitor's printed ad or coupon for an identical product." and she told me its for grocery stores only.I told her I didnt think that was what they meant by it and she assured me that was it. BTW I was trying to use walgreens.
So Needless to say I did not get to use any store coupons at my walmart.
P31Woman... I live in New Mexico and I have been getting "Bad couponer" treatment from the cashiers for a while....almost every time I go to walmart....and they call the manager, who comes over and checks my coupons and the products and every time they take tell the cashier it is ok to take my coupons. I think the company is pressuring the cashiers to be more careful. I had on cashier tell that if they took a bad coupon they had to pay the store back themselves and she couldn't afford it. So I TRY not to get offended but I do make sure i go over all the coupons very closely I am planning to spend there.

I was in on Thanksgiving this year to pick up something for the dinner and I was price matching something else while I was there and had some sort of problem with it, can't even remember what was going on now, but the customer service manager happened to walk behind my cashier and I asked if we could get the manager since they were right there and the cashier said I am one. Darned if I didn't look at their name tag then and see they were one, but I still said 'wow, you are? are you sure?' cause they were just being that loony at a simple transaction. I still feel really bad for being rude, it just kinda came out cause I was worried about getting home to DH while I had the dinner still on the stove.
OP maybe your cashier was new and inexperienced and wanted to be sure of her decisions.

Seems to be very much YMMV. I was wondering about trying to price match the $1.99 Finish from the Wags ad this week. If you don't get to Wags at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, the stores will not have any stock the rest of the week and don't seem to care if they ever get any more.

My spouse shops at walmart more than I do, and he has mentioned he had some dingy cashiers and such lately. I kind of wonder if they were the new ones hired temporarily for the holidays. I figure I can't expect to much of the clerks there anyway, because walmart doesn't exactly pay well. I rarely see the same people working there when I make my trips in, so I am guessing the have a pretty high turnover. I generally just look for the self checkouts because it is easier to get out of there!
I had a manager tell me they get "wrote" up if they take a coupon that is not right.
My store is bad about saying "that is not what is pictured" on the coupon.
