Thumbs Down WALMART For returns when coupons were used.

I just wanted to warn people if you return items when coupons were used and the CSR adjusts the price of each item down to reflect the coupon, you will not get the tax back for the difference of the coupon discount.

I'm not sure if the CSR didn't have frickin' clue on how to correctly return items when coupons were used or what but this is the situation I found myself in.

    For example:

    cost of item = $10
    coupon = $2
    tax rate = 10%

Your receipt would look like this:
    cost of item $10
    coupon - 2
    tax ($10 x 10%) + 1
    total $9

But if the CSR adjusts the return item to reflect the coupon:

    cost of item: $8
    tax ($8 x 10%) + .80
total return $8.80 (20 cents less than you actually paid)

If you are returning multiple items this can really add up. Just a heads up to ask for what you are entitled to.

Never had this to happen before .The 4 or 5 times I've taken something back that I purchased using a coupon.I have always got the full price of the item back. The csm even told a cashier to give me all my money back becauce they get remberced for coupons so they can not give it back to me after it goes into there system.

Yup, your problem is bigger than the tax issue. You should be getting back the full price of the item, not the post-coupon price. You PAID with a coupon so it should be included in your refund. Don't accept less than what you are owed.

Is the full value thing corporate policy? I don't think the Walmart system is equipped to accept returns where the coupon value is added back. The CSR wanted to give me back cash instead of refunding my credit card because the system wouldn't allow adding back the coupons.

I insisted on a refund by way of original form of payment (credit card) because I didn't want to spend the cash but the system wouldn't allow it and the CSR and her manager were not going to give me back more than I paid oop. I just walked out because Walmart guest relations was closed and I want the refund on my credit card.

You should have received full amount of the cost of the item. They are receiving reimbursement for your Q. That being said....returns using a receipt, they first scan the transaction number on the bottom. If your OOP was only say$2 total the system will not authorize a refund greater than that amount. That is where you had problems. I'm not sure as to why you needed a return on something you bought with a coupon, but I would think differently about my future transactions. Either buy other needed things on the same receipt so the total is higher, or do the return as a "no-receipt".

The full value thing is a poliy wherever you go. Like pp's said, once that coupon is in the system to send in for the refund, you have to get your full amount back or they would be making money off of you. I also agree that if your total was only $2 for a $4 item, they can only give you the $2 back. Plus, tax is never refundable, just so you know.

    Thanks for your replies.

My receipt total was $150+ more than the items I was returning. I wasn't even concerned about full value. They really pissed me off with their little tax scam and the employee incompetency got me wondering how many folks have they ripped off?

In regards to thinking about my future purchases: I just won't shop at Walmart anymore. Not worth it.

K-Mart also reduces the amount of the returned product by the coupon plus the amount of the coupon doubled. I don't mind the amount of the coupon that was doubled since that is coming out of K-Mart's pocket, but is it legal to hold back the original coupon amount since they are going to get reimbursed by the manufacturing company? Who can be contacted about this question in PA?

That's so wierd. I always get the full value back. I don't make it a habit of returning Items. However if something is not right about the product I will return it. I've received full value returns at Walmart, Target and Kmart. I know on the receipt @ Target you can tell if coupons are used. Walmart has the coupons on the bottom how would they even know if a coupon was used???
