Default Walgreens Sales Tax Issue

I work on the Kansas/Missouri state line. I have a Walgreens that I love that is in Kansas but I was looking at my spreadsheet and I noticed that almost a third of my out of pocket money was due to sales tax. In Kansas you pay sales tax before coupons and in Missouri it is after coupons.

So I had tried the store closest to my office but it's in a not great part of town and did not seem to be very coupon friendly. So I decided to go to a different Walgreens that is just a little ways away. I had some issues with my order because they were out of something I was going to buy so I had to adjust what I was doing on the fly but was rather surprised when my total was over $3 when I was expecting it to be pennies.

Well I got to looking at my receipt and they charged me sales tax before coupons! I didn't say anything while I was at the store b/c I wanted to double check so I looked it up on the internet and I was right. So I called the store manager and reported the problem to him. He was very nice. He's said he was going to call corporate and get back to me.

I worry that now I've put a great big target on my back when I was hoping to fly under the radar. But if that happens it's not like it matters b/c I still wouldn't have shopped there if this issue wasn't fixed b/c their sales tax is 1.5% higher than what I would pay in Kansas.

Don't know what the point of my post is but I just needed to share.

Cyndi

I think I've always had to pay the tax on the total before coupons. It doesn't really bother me since I still get stuff for wicked cheap.

I live in Oregon... we have a state tax that comes from our paychecks rather than on our shopping trips. As an avid couponer, this is awesome for me. I get stuff for free (REALLY free, no tax) to be able to donate or sell at yard sales.

on the bright side when I do my budget tracking (we always separate out tax in our budget to see how much the government is robbing us of in reality bit by bit and piece by piece) I know I had a GOOD month when most of my expenses were tax :)

See, we're lucky here. We get to have it taken from our paycheck AND get to pay it at the register.

I know. You're jealous.

Here in NC we pay sales tax on the coupon value unless it is a store coupon - in that case there is no sales tax.

Now that I've said that, I'm thinking it may have changed recently....I think I heard buzz that CVS is changing how tax is charged, and now you pay it on ECB amount as well. Not sure.

Unfortunately our sales tax just went up from 6.75% to 7.75% as well. Brilliant move on the part of the governor during a recession... and yes, I know others pay close to 10%. If feel for you.
