HELP Walgreens What's the real rule regarding overage?

I tried to buy Sambucol today with the $10 IVC and the $4 IP. I've actually already done this deal twice last week, but today when I tried to do it for the last time, it didn't work. She scanned my $4 q and then when she saw the $10 IVC she said she couldn't do it, because the product was $12.99. I knew if she just scanned it it would work fine. I had another product to cover the overage, but she wouldn't do it and called the manager who also said I couldn't do that and acted like I was trying to rob them.

So, is this technically allowed? I know it would have gone through. Like I said, I've already done this twice--and actually 1 time with the exact same cashier I had today! I guess she didn't realize what I was doing the other day. So, what's the real rule on this? I'm just curious if I was really right or if it really just depends on who the cashier is.

    Thanks.

it is YMMV i think depending on your store and the staff...technically if they do not take the coupon at face value it is coupon fraud, but unfortunately i guess they also have the right to deny coupons...seems kind of crazy to me because they will get there $ from the manufacturer and IMO it hurts there customer service to deny the q's...i don't think there is a hard and fast rule at any store except the commissary when you have an email from the manager =) ...

I don't think it's allowed. And I don't think all Wag's have the same computers......I was doing the overage on the Perfect 10 hair colors (clearanced to $3.59, $5/off Q) and it worked at one store, but not at 2 others.....The same one box of color, and one coupon mixed in with 3 or 4 other items.

My coupon wouldn't even scan..The BA ( who is awesome ) had to key it in and price adjust it to .99 cents since my store sells Sambucol for 10.99...but it was still free...They only had 2 of them on the shelf and I kind of felt bad thinking I was gonna get such a huge overage anyway...so I was kewl with the coupon adjustment....

My wags refuses to adjust mfg. coupons down even one cent. I was afraid this deal wouldn't work for me, but instead of going for the overage I bought 2 at 11.99, which came to 23.98, the easysaver q took off $10 off 2=$20, which left 3.98. The coupon went through at $4 off, even though they refused to let me use a $1 off coupon on a .99 cent Johnson's product, even though the coupon didn't exclude trial size. Weird. I'm just glad it went through without a hitch. I don't know what Wags deal is with refusing to adjust down mfg. coupons, but it is so annoying. That is one of the reasons why CVS gets most of my business.

From how I'm understanding this overage situation, it goes something like this....

Situation (A) if there is overage from a MQ, for example a $1.00 MQ on a $0.99 product, then the cashier is required to type in the adjusted (or full, depending on cashier) coupon amount and as we say "push it through." This is okay if you are at a store that is not picky about it and by that I mean, their lost prevention person is not picky about it. - In some districts there are very strict LP supervisors that will grill employees about the way they type in coupons. I know girl who was investigated over her coupon ringing. Therefore, I think sometimes it is just stressful for employees to deal with if it risks their jobs.

Situation (B) if overage is caused from combining a MQ and an ESC/Store Q, this seems to be fine at most stores. At least there is nothing special the cashier has to do to allow for it besides just scanning away. So as I see it there is really no risk for them.

And just so everyone knows there is not a "formal" register training the Wags employees go through (like computer simulation). So everything that they know, right or wrong, was taught by mostly likely another employee in the store. I think that's why there are so many differences between every cashier.

Anywho... sorry for the ramble, hope it makes sense to someone.

That makes much more sense to me. Thanks for the great explanation. I appreciate it. That will help in planning transactions. Reps were sent your way!

I actually had a cashier accuse me of coupon fraud for using a coupon that created overage so I emailed them from the link on their website. This is the reply I got (in a letter with their other coupon policies) last May. I carry the letter in my coupon binder to show to cashiers if necessary (I haven't needed it since the original issue), it appears to be copied from something directed to their employees:

"If you sell a product with a retail that is LESS THAN the face value of a coupon the coupon deduction would be
    - The same as the retail price if the state requires the customer to pay taxes.
    - The product retail PLUS taxes if the state does not require the customer to pay taxes.
    -
For instant Value Coupons, stores receive credit from the manufacturer ONLY if the coupon is scanned; credit appears as "scan down" credit on the Purchase Ledger. The coupon must be scanned so if retail value is lower, then it must be made to match the coupon price."

I don't really shop at Wags, I'm a CVS girl, but since they had the free Garnier and Glade air fresheners I decided to go. I gave the cashier my coupons and ivc. She scanned them all except one. She said it would result in an overage. She said if I have The W Card from the pharmacy, they can add the overage to my card. I didn't have one so I just added a small easter mashmellow chocolate to bring the total back to positive. I paid 2 cents.

    My questions.
    What is The W Card?
    Where can I get one?
    Does it cost anything?
Has anyone ever had overage being applied to this card?

Cashier was confused, you can't add an overage to a "W" card, or a Rx Prescription Savings card.
