SMILE What to do with all these pears!

A friend of mine gave me an enormous bag of pears. I could never eat them all before they go bad, so I am looking for a creative way to use them.

Thanks!

Hmmmmm Pears are tricky.

I've canned them before...but honestly I wouldn't do them again, if you paid me (there just kind of a pain).

Don't think you can freeze them easily....you could make pear sauce....

How about instead of a big peach cobbler you do the pears instead and make a pear cobbler.

Do you make any jam??? You can add pears to strawberry or raspberry to make jam.

What about pear sauce?

Here's a link to a recipe. Sounds easy! I might have to find some cheap pears and try it!

Thought of another: You could do a big fruit cocktail with them.

I am canning pears right now. We picked a ton from our trees. I really don't find it that hard to can...you may want to try. If you do, a good site to go to is www.usacanning.com

Pear butter!! Core and peel the pears, then stick in a crockpot with a tiny bit of water. Cook on medium heat, when the pears start to get really soft add sugar and cinnamon. Continue cooking until the pear butter is a rich brown, and is thick like apple butter. I made some a couple weeks ago and it took about 24 hrs for it to cook down. It is absolutely delicious.

Lots of great ideas! Thanks. He said he has tons more pears if I run out. Maybe if I can some and then try some of these other great ideas, I'll help him with his excess and help my food budget!

I made pear butter last year and from the juice I made pear jelly- both very good. Instead of cooking the juice out for pear butter you stop the cooking midway and drain off the juice, use the juice for the jelly then resume the cooking for pear butter.

the pear butter sounds yummy!

You could do apple crisp and sub pears for apples.

I used to do up cooked apples like you would have in apple pie (with cinn, sugar etc) and freeze them in bags. Then defrost and make pie, apple crisp, topping for ice cream etc. as needed. I'll bet you could do the same with pears.
