Birds Eye Steamfresh -- can I use it for green bean casserole?

I know all the recipes I have seen mostly call for canned green beans. Can I just steam these and use them in place of the canned ones?

I'm guessing you're looking at the standard Campbells cream of mushroom recipe? I do not see a problem with substituting cooked frozen for canned. I make mine from scratch using fresh green beans and no Campbells, and its marvelous, so I wouldn't see why frozen would be a problem in your case.

Make sure you cook them first, otherwise, it won't work...been there done that

Why wouldn't the frozen ones work without cooking them. They may have a little extra liquid, but adding 5-10 min. onto the cooking time should take care of that. I've never made a GBC before with frozen, so take my approval with a grain of salt.

I don't know exactly why they don't work, but I think it has something to do with the way they are frozen, and having to be steamed to cook. I added a bunch of extra time, everytime I took them out and found they were still cold, and it just didn't work.
Believe me, you're safer to cook them in the micro first, and not be like me with no GB casserole on Thanksgiving. I thought my daughters were gonna have a heart attck... lol

I know it is too late for Thanksgiving but.....

I *ALWAYS* used frozen green beans for my green bean casserole. I do not cook them but I usually try to thaw them out a little on the counter while I do other things. I have no problem with it coming out nice. If they are a little cold you will just want to add a few minutes to the cooking time.

Plus frozen taste so much better and have a better texture than canned in a casserole.

bumping up cause I'm making a casserole tonight with frozen green beans. I did cook them first though, as the recipe on the can of mushroom soup I had said to use cooked green beans, and with previous posters experience, I decided better safe than sorry, hehe.

I think frozen or fresh greenbeans are fine as long as they are cooked.

Canned is already cooked, you're basicly just reheating them and adding spices.
