Galveston or Corpus Christi? Any Suggestions?

I know its kinda last minute but I would like to take my family to the beach next month. I'm having a hard time deciding between Galveston & Corpus Christi. It will be hubby, 6 yr old, 4 yr old, & a 6mth old traveling by car. Any suggestions you may have (which beach, activities, which hotel, etc) will be greatly appreciated. All input will be considered. Thanks in advance. :)

I have always heard that Galveston was beautiful, but I havent been down there in years so I cant really tell you first hand experience.

If you go to Tripadvisor.com and go to the search bar and type in each of those names and then on the top left go to the travel forum, there will be a bunch of info for both of those cities about places to go, things not to do, good eats etc.

I live in Corpus Christi and I would recommand galveston... We went to the CC beach about a month agao and the beach was not cleaned. They had seaweed everywhere.... Im not sure what hotels or activities they have but the beaches are so much better.

LOL, I live 25 miles from Galveston, worked there for many years and I highly recommend Corpus but NOT Corpus Christi beaches. Drive a little way and go to Padre Island National Sea Shore (not South Padre Island). You can get a weekly pass for $10 or so and you will have tons of privacy. I took my girls there for 8 years in a row, in spite of living so close to Galveston. One year we found lots of live sand dollars.

Galveston water is mostly brown; you can not even see your feet when in up to your knees. Water at Padre Island is gorgeous blue and clear.

Both beaches will likely have a ton of dead seaweed this time of year; it's normal and it's important for the beach preservation.

Another thing about Galveston is that Hurricane Ike struck hard in September 2008, and while it might not be as visible to someone who's never been there the island is having a difficult time recovering.

I agree. We usually go to south Texas every year. Galveston and Corpus both have their strong points. I love the hisorical homes in Galveston (my uncle has one of them) and my kids love the battleship in Corpus but when we want the beach Padre is the place to go. It is beautiful! I wish I could go!

Anywhere you go after a hurricane hits will still be recovering. We went to Kemah like a yr after Ike hit and they still had buildings and stuff down...

I live about 40 miles from Galveston and I would not recommend the beaches. I would have to agree with above posters and go to South Padre Island. There is a lot to do there for the kids too. I think Corpus is a great place to take the kids (a great aquarium), but I don't know too much about the beaches.

Corpus doesn't. Padre Island does. We have never gone to South Padre Island - always North - the one closest to Corpus, but still a little drive from there.
