    Default Visit Rhode Island!

I tried posting this response to Bonniem, in her Cape Cod thread. For some reason it won't post ( I tried splitting it up into two posts because it's so long, still won't work} So I'm putting it here in the hopes more people will see it and visit my beautiful state and boost our economy.

Narragansett, Rhode Islandhas lovely beaches and lots of reasonably priced rentals. It's also a quick drive (30minutes tops) to Providence, which has tons of stuff to see and do.
    Days:
-There is our fabulous Children's Museum- Providence Children's Museum - Home Page
-Roger Williams Park Zoo- RWP Zoo : Home
    - 5minutes farther up 95 to Pawtucket (my hometown) and you can see a tripleA ball game at McCoy Stadium, The Official Site of Minor League Baseball | Pawtucket Red Sox Homepage
home of the Pawsox the Boston Red Sox farm team. For $11 for box seats and $7 adults, $5 children and seniors for General admission you can’t beat it. Concession pricing is reasonable as well. We got to see Boston’s Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka (aka Dice-K) pitch, when they were coming off the DL.

-While in Pawtucket you can check out the Slater Mill Historic site, birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution and on Sundays browse the farmers market Slater Mill :: Home

    Evenings:

-Federal Hill, Providences little Italy. Pick any restaurant on it for the best Italian food RI has to offer

-The Providence Place Mall, for upscale dining and shopping : Providence Place Mall - Upscale Shopping, Dining, Entertainment in Providence, Rhode Island

-The Providence Performing Arts Center- Official Website :: Providence Performing Arts Center :: Home
-Our amazing Waterfire art display...so cool! It's really something else. Boaters Light braziers in the river and its basin. You can take a gondolier ride through the display. Music is piped through speakers, and buskers and performances are going on all over. It's walkable and safe for families- Welcome | WaterFire

We're also a quick drive either up or down 95 to:
Boston (think freedom trail, duck boat tours and Boston Common.)
-The Boston Museum of Science- Museum of Science, Boston | Home
-The New England Aquarium- New England Aquarium Home
Parking and driving can be a hassle and expensive in Boston, but there is a train from Providence.
-Kids always like the train and it let's off right in front of the Science Museum.
Amtrak - Stations - Providence, RI (PVD)

    Connecticut
-for the kiddies, Mystic Aquarium Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration.
-For the adults, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos)

So lot's of day-trip opportunities. If you just want to do the sun and surf thing (we have over 100 beaches in our tiny state) with awesome seafood and :
-If camping out and bonfires on the beach are your thing, you can stay here: Fisherman’s state park and campground RI Parks
It's close to Wheeler beach ( my fav)
    -Wheeler beach RI Parks
which has a view of the point Judith lighthouse, and is a 3minute drive to
-Iggy's chowdah shack, which is the BEST seafood you can find in RI (and they have outdoor picnic tables on a grassy lawn, so salty, sandy kiddoes can eat without changing.-http://iggysdoughboys.com/default.html
They have tons of printable coupons on their site, and if you like them on facebook they have coupons too, Makes it much cheaper to eat.
-Brickly's Ice cream is the BEST ice cream shop around, all homemade and sinfully good. Again, they have lots of picnic tables on the grass for the kids. Brickley's Homemade Ice Cream

    - If you're looking for adult dining and entertainment,
-The Coast Guard House The Coast Guard House Restaurant
-The Hammer Head Grill (my fav, ) Hammerhead Grill
-You can get to Newport from Narragansett if you take RT 138 over the Jamestown bridge and Newport bridge if want to tour the Cliff Walk and Newport Mansions. Newport, RI's Cliff Walk combines ocean views, mansions, and a rocky shore line into a 3.5 mile walk.
    Or

-the International Tennis Hall of Fame: Top Stories | International Tennis Hall of Fame
-If you're going first week of August the Newport Jazz fest is something to see:
    Newport Jazz Festival

They have a bunch of tiny 1 room cottages all around Iggy's too. I've googled Narragansett beach rentals and found tons of listings. Now would definitely be the time to look, because they book up fast! All this packed into a state 35x45 miles wide/long ...very easy to get around!
If this looks like a tourism RI ad, it's not….this is Visit Rhode Island :: Welcome :: VisitRhodeIsland.com.
My state is really hurting right now, our unemployment is still in double digits and a good summer tourist season would help a lot of people here feed their families and keep roofs over their heads..so visit RI!

I'd trade you a visit here to East Bay, for a visit to NOLA.... I don't know where in Louisiana you are, but when DH and I did a trip to the french quarter, and we really felt at home.
