Default New York Hotels-where to stay/where to find a good deal?

I am having trouble finding a good deal on a hotel room in NYC. I am taking my oldest there in November and we want to stay in the city so we will be close to "the action" lol. I am not too picky about what area we stay in but we don't want to be on the outskirts of the city-or right at the airport as I am afraid we won't sleep.

I am thinking we are going Wednesday to Saturday but that's flexible and maybe with the Veteran's Day holiday, I am just unrealistic on what the rates will be. But looking to get under $200 for a decent clean room with a PRIVATE bathroom. I couldn't imagine sharing a bathroom ick

Been on expedia, orbitz, hotels.com obsessively lol

I CAN help!! I love NYC and love a budget! Ok go to applecorehotels.com and check out The Hotel at Times Square. It is very close to theatre, fifth ave, shopping, about 20 blocks to the park. Clean, they give you a decent breakfast in the morning, internet in the lobby. The only negative is there are only two small elevators for the building so pick a lower floor so you can take the stairs if needed.

Another thing to keep in mind is what action you mean - because the city is about 100 blocks long and 12 wide and taxi fares can get very expensive so paying $20.00 more per night to stay in hotel within walking distance of the things you want to do is cheaper than having to taxi places. Plus I felt like riding in the taxi was raising my blood pressure. I was 8 months pregnant and I walked just about everywhere.

one really cool free thing to do is take the Staten Island Ferry - that takes you past statue of Liberty. but that is very far south so expensive taxi ride to get down there.

If you can possibly go in December and celebrate Christmas, NYC has wonderful Christmas decorations and you know the real Santa is at Macy's.

do you know about the half price theatre tix place TKTS booths?

Have a great time - NYC is truly spectacular.

It's tough to find a good deal anywhere in Manhattan unless you want to go up above time square area closer to central park which is slightly more residential. The best place to find good prices and see some reviews of these places is probably TripAdvisor.com. There are no cheap places so prepare to spend some money plus it seems everything is a lot more expensive in the areas popular with tourists. I don't know if I would plan to go during Christmas time unless you book now because that area becomes very popular and its hard to get any rooms.

Thanks everyone. We are going in November right around Veteran's Day because then I don't have to have my daughter miss more than one day of school.

We are going for fun but also to look at some colleges.

I'd like to be near Times Square or Broadway. I know she would love to see all the lights and even if we don't get to go to a show, she'd love to see the theaters.

Other than that, we've never been so want to go see the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. All that touristy stuff. ;)

will check out the sites you reccomended!
