Re: anyone ever been to japan ? We lived in Okinawa Japan , but never had a chance to visit mainland. The culture is really unique and she will enjoy it. I would look into an organized visit with a travel guide and also study up on some brochure books so you are familliar with all of the customs. All of the young people speak English but most are very shy about it. They learn proper so slang is harder for them to understand.
Have you looked into an exchange program? There are some great ones out there if you do a little research. It's a little scary to travel abroad but the adventure thrill moves in pretty quickly :) Since your daughter is 16 I would have her do some of the research with you, give her a good experience on how to plan for such a big expense.
