We are staying at the Waldorf Astoria. We will be there Feb. 12th - 15th. Any suggestions on things to do that is walking distance? It will be me, dh, a 10 yr old and a 3 yr old. Any suggestions on eating? Weather? What to bring to wear?

Any suggestions are help will be greatly appreciated.

I do not know what is to do around there, however, if you go to maps.google.com and type in Waldorf Astoria and then click on the one on the left that is the listing for your hotel and then scroll allllll the way in on the map you will be able to see the actual names of places that are around there and then you can google what you found. I saw lots of cool things, restaurants and stuff. HTH

You will be in the heart of the city, plenty of places you can walk to. I hope you're up to it though, when I moved here, people kept saying it's not that far but my feet were already aching and we still haven't reached our destination.

Depending on what you want to eat, restaurants can be a bit pricey. It's been kinda cold lately, just check the weather forecast before you leave. I guess that would dictate what clothes to pack as well.

Will I have to bring my daughter's carseat? We will be picked up from the airport to be brought to our hotel. Then we will be brought to and from the Apollo theatre where they will be performing. Her carseat is so big and heavy. I don't know what the laws are in New york about that though. I also don't know how or if it can go on the airplane seat. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

hugs,
Darleen

You are required to have your daughter in a seat to get to the hotel. However, most car services seem to have them for a fee. You can check with whoever is picking you up (if it is not a carseatless friend). You can ride in a cab w/o a seat, although I don't know if it is legal, I know it is widely done.
If you decide you need to bring the carseat, there should be a sticker on the side stating it is FAA approved, and thus will fit on the plane. What seat do you have and how old is your DD?
I just got back from a week in NYC with DH and DS, but didn't do too much touristy stuff. Times Square area to FAO Schwartz is definitely walkable, a short 15 blocks and lots to look at on the way. Really enjoyed Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty. Ground zero is emotional, but currently just a construction site so not much to look at.
Let me know if you want anymore details.

My daughter is 3 yr, but is very tiny. She only weighs 24 lbs. I have a Britax carseat, which is very heavy. I will have to look and see is it has the FAA on it. Someone told me not to miss the natural museum of history. They of course suggested time square, statue of liberty and rockefella center too.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

hugs,
Darleen

We go to New York several times a year - for eating, we always purchase the gift certificates for $5 ($25 gift certificate) on restaurants.com.....then we go on adventures.....love it, save lots of money and it is part of the thrill of our trip.

Oh! A friend and I are planning a trip to New York in April. Thanks for that tip I would have never thought about it! I've used restaurant.com here in California but didn't think about using it when I travel. THANKS!
