HELP Help to see snow in NC!

My son is 9 and has never seen snow. On his Christmas list this year is to see snow. Therefore, my DH and I have been talking about driving to NC so he can see snow and maybe ice skate, snow ski, ride in that tube (whatever it is called), etc…. Anyway, I have looked on-line and really have no clue of a good deal for these types of things. We either would like to go the week after Christmas, MLK holiday weekend, or President’s Day weekend. We would be going for about 5 – 6 days roughly.

I was thinking about Gatlinburg or somewhere in the Smokies so we can go to Cades Cove too. My main thing is finding a reasonable price for a beginner to ski and renting equipment. Since we current live in FL we have nothing for the snow. Also, help with finding lodging that is not that expensive.

Thanks for any suggestions you can give me on this one.

Ober Gatlinburg is pretty reasonable they rent everything you need. Also if you during the week in Jan or Feb the hotels are really cheap. Chances are the Smokey moutains will be covered in real snow.

Boone/Banner Elk NC is a great place for snow slopes. Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain...just to name 2. I learned to ski there in college. Its a college area so if you go over the break like you are saying I bet the rates etc are reasonable. Along 221, the main road to get anywhere in that area, there are rental places that rent skis, ski bibs etc much more reasonable than the slopes themselves. One of them...Appalachian something even has an ice skating rink along with sking and snow tubing.

There are also other things to do in the area which may be fun...Grandfather Mtn, Linville caverns, Blue Ridge Parkway, Blowing Rock, etc.

We are going to take our 3 year old up this year as soon as FIL goes to FL for the winter....love the location of his house...not so fond of him

I have been looking at Maggie Valley N.C. and at the Best Western it was less than 300 for 4 nights and it included continental breakfast for 4 people.

So we have booked a cabin in Gatlinburg for MLK weekend and a few extra days after that. I checked several ski slopes and the cheapest I found was Ober. Since we have never been skiing before we are looking to be newbies at this, therefore, we don't need to go to a big area. We will get lessons there and then try it out on our own. We also, plan on going to Cades Cove while we are there.

Thank you all for your help!
