Cafe Mason and Lori's Diner are both on Mason between Geary and O'Farrell St.
Cafe Mason had the best orange juice I've ever had! We were there for lunch but the oj was for my dd. We went there as soon as we got to the hotel and dropped off our bags. They served alcohol and that's what we were in dire need of!! I had an awesome gnocchi dish.
Lori's Diner must be a 24hr. joint. Some of the city's finest (cops) were in there when we got there at 5:30am for breakfast. My internal clock and dd's thought it was 7:30a when we got up at 4:30a. After about an hour of trying to get back to sleep, we walked over there - with dh, of course! Great service, decor, and food!
My brother's wedding was at the Marine Memorial Club/Hotel at the corner of Sutter and Mason. We had the entire 11th floor! It was beautiful and good food/drinks!
Beresford Hotel on Sutter - just 2 doors down from the Marines Memorial club/hotel - was not something I think I would stay at again. Yes, I know it was only $119 a night, but there was no AC and the front desk was not customer service oriented at all. The couple of foreign guys there the most were more interested in smoking outside the front door than being at the desk. The rooms were very, very small. Our view was a brick wall. Water pressure for us on the 6th floor was minimal. The positives was it's location, the price, and a decent free breakfast in the morning (crossiants, applies, bananas, grapes, a couple of cereal choices, muffins, donuts, coffee and orange juice).
The Great Eastern Restaurant in Chinatown was very good - but we learned about the "homeless friendly mayor" SF has and were disappointed. They were quite aggressive and all over the place in the evening. We don't have that in downtown Cleveland. They cracked down on that when one of them stabbed and killed a pedestrian a few years back because he wouldn't give the guy $$.
Pier 39 was lots of fun! We loved seeing all the sea lions and dd did the bungee cord attraction which made her day. We ate at Wipe Out there and really liked the food and atmosphere. I had a "spiked Corona" which none of us had ever heard of before. It's a bottle of Corona with a shot of Cuevro Gold poured in. All I can say is YUMMM!
Taxi rides were adventorous as usual! We also experienced public transportation with a bus ride from Pier 39 through Chinatown to our hotel. I've never seen so many people on a bus in my life!
Got pizza from Piraat Pizza across from our hotel that was great and it was free delivery to the hotel, right to our room!
Interestingly our group noticed the lack of visible cops and cop cars. And the prices of everything were considerably higher than what we're used to. All in all, our trip was just fine and we tried to experience as much of it as possible during our 1 full free day on Sunday. The info we got from this thread was truly helpful.
