Default Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach?

Ok, I am planning a family trip next summer and I am thinking about one of these places. So far, I've done a little research online. (looking up rental houses and condos mostly)

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been to the outer banks in North Carolina a couple of years ago, but it's been ages since I've been to Myrtle Beach. We are looking for a variety of things to do, plus we want to be close to the beach (ideally walking distance). I also thought about the Gulf Shores in Alabama.

Any thoughts?

To be honest, they've both grown so much in the last few years, I don't want much to do with either one except for maybe bike week at MB. That is an awesome week but only if you are on a bike. The traffic at MB horrendous and the whole place is just loud. But you are looking for lots to do, that is the place. Lots of shopping, water parks, putt putt, and food.
I haven't been to HH is years but I've heard it's become a rich man's vacation spot, but I'm sure you can find plenty of less expensive places. If anyone in your family golfs it's great, but can't speak about any of the other entertainment cause it's been so long. I'm really boring and when I look for a vacation spot, I want relaxation and quiet. I love Nags Head, NC and Pipe Stem Park in WV.

Yeah, I just hate being in crowded places, but my parents (in their 60's) are worried that there won't be enough to do in Hilton Head.

I had spectaular luck once w/ Hilton Head.
Heading someplace else and stopped to check it out.
Found a timeshare that they rent like a hotel when not in use.
2 BR On The Ocean $70.00/night. Right on the ocean. Beach off our patio.
Skip the "name brand" looking ones, go for the non-chain types.
They even handed us a pile of keys & said, go look at each one. You can stay at whatever one you like best.
..Then there was the all-you-can-eat whole lobster or King Crab legs for $19.00/pp.
I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Never did make it to our intended destination.
This was on a whim, like a walk-up rate. Not planned in advance.

We drove up to Hilton Head last year on a whim after getting bored to tears after spending too long in Savannah and we hated to leave. It's a beautiful area, beaches are phenomenal (this from a Florida girl!) and they double coupons - I was in heaven. I want to go back for a full-blown vacation if gas prices EVER become reasonable again. Until then I'm not leaving central Florida!

My family goes to North Myrtle Beach every summer, and it has gotten much more crowded the past few years. Not as bad as Myrtle Beach, but a lot of people still. There is more to do in MB than NMB I would say. My family doesn't do a lot of "attractions" as we are in the ocean almost every morning and afternoon during vacation.

Just got back from Hilton Head, I love it there and have been going for years.

There are great beaches, it's very Kid Friendly and there is plenty to do if there's bad weather. ( Great golf but also shopping, wildlife, dolphins, crabbing, etc.)

Our Condo (called a Villa in HHI ) is walking distance from Folly Field beach and a ten minute drive to just about everything. (About 1 Mile to CVS and Publix ...lol, went to CVS 3 times last weekend there)

Send me a pm if you want more info and rates, not sure if I'm allowed to post all that here. We have lots of availability and great rates in August, September and October. Sept. is my favorite month there. We take ECB's!!!

We've been to both! I found that there are better deals to be had at Myrtle Beach! We always stay in NORTH myrtle, it is a LOT less crowded than Myrtle Beach. There are some brand new beautiful ocean front properties. Hilton Head is beautiful as well but it is much more expensive!
