    DD3 I need something to read! ~Winner is Kulis!~

I read all the time, (well, when I have time, lol). I'd like to read the new book The Help, and I'm on the waiting list for it at my library, but there's about 300 people on the list! It might be January or later by the time I get the book, (I suppose I could buy the book, but I'm cheap.)

So I'm looking for a few good reads. I will read almost anything: fiction, non-fiction, juvenile literature, classic literature. Stuff I DON'T read: murder mysteries, "guy" fiction, cheap Harlequin romances.

I've read these over several years, but this is just to give you an idea of what I read. I don't stick with any particular author or genre. I love a book that makes you think. Or laugh out loud. Or cry. Or all three.

    General Fiction:
    Cold Sassy Tree
    Water For Elephants
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time
Push (The movie Precious was based on this book)
The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society
    Nineteen Minutes
The Case of the Missing Books: A Mobile Library Mystery
These is My Words: Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine

    Chick-Lit
Confessions of a Shopaholic (and it's sequels)
    Boy Meets Girl
    The Boy Next Door
    Something Borrowed
    Something Blue

I admit it, I love a good juvenile novel now and then. There's good stuff out there!
    Juvenile Literature:
    So.Be.It
    Our Only May Amelia
    Penny From Heaven
    Belle Prater's Boy
    Rules
Nothing But The Truth: A Documentary Novel
The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian

    Classic Literature:
    David Copperfield
    Les Miserables
    Pride and Prejudice
    Tom Sawyer

    American Girl books:
    All the Kit books
    All the Molly books

    Juvenile Classic Literature:
    All the Little House books
Anne of Green Gables (and sequels through book five)

    Non-Fiction/Memoirs:
    Please Stop Laughing at Me
    The Glass Castle
The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio

So...post your suggestions here. You can post more than once, but let someone else post between. I'll have DH choose a random winner Sunday, 8pm, CST.

The prize: A 30 coupon potluck of all non-inserts, PLUS: Idaho Spuds Signature Potato Bits TMF.

    Feel free to discuss!

Oh, and when you suggest a book, let me know the author. You can give me a general idea of what the book is about, but don't give the ending away.

I read a bunch of your lost -- I wanted someone to discuss So B. It with when I read it!
Ok -- recent though provoking reads:
How to be an American Housewife by Margaret Dilloway (about a Japanese War Bride)
Room by Emma Donoghue-- written from the point of view of a 5 yr old (that was my last book club discussion book and we all had stuff to say!)
Another book by The Glass Castle's author, Jenette Walls: Half-Broke Horses (historical fun novel that tells the story of Jenette's grandmother)

My favorite series: Big Stone Gap and sequels by Adriana Trigiani - set in Apalachain Mountains and tells the story of the small-town's pharmacist

ooh-- another good read that I never thought I'd like, but loved:
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein (written by the viewpoint of a dog - if you like dogs, you will love this book even though it might be considered a "guy" book)

Another interesting read: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Sijie Dai

The Watsons go to Birmingham is an awesome kids book. It will make you laugh at times! It is by Christopher Paul Curtis. I also love any books by Jerry Spinelli.

Holes is another awesome kids book.

Adult books: black and blue by Anna Quindlen is a good read but can be about a tough subject, hence the name.

Silver Girl by Erin Hildebrand is also a great "summer" read. I got it from the library and it was worth the wait. :)

    Thanks for the chance!

My favorite book is Indaba, My Children by Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa. The bulk of it is African folk tales, though the last section is more about different tribal practices, and just life in Africa in general. It is quite interesting and he is a wonderful storyteller.

Have you read crime suspense/medical thriller books?? I love ANYTHING by Tess Gerritsen (I think I butchered the spelling of her last name.) I actually read her Rizolli and Isles series LONG before they made it into a TV show. Outside of the crime suspense, she does medical thrillers like The Bone Garden, Gravity, and a few other good ones that I can't think of the title. She was a practicing MD and actually stopped so she could write full time. LOVE her books.

OH The HELP!!! Such a great book - Sad your library list is so long - it's been out like 3 years - try amazon.com for a used copy - shipping is 3.99 (amazon forces you to charge that much) but sometimes the book is only .01 (ok I just checked it myself - not that cheap at all!) Ask friends - someone bought it!!

Ok other books - Honey for a Child's Heart and Honey for a Women's Heart are both books about reading - and offer lots of recommendations! Gladys Hunt.

Three Weeks with my Brother - by Nicholas Sparks - We all know his love stories (which are good) but this is his wonderful simple prose combined with beautiful imagery scenery - it's wonderful.

Ok I'll save a few more so I can enter again! Thanks for the chance. I love talking books!!

Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone! Keep them coming!

Half-Broke Horses: I read this book out loud to my mom when she was in the hospital. I had some very interesting conversations with her. She grew up on a cattle ranch in Mexico, so a lot of things in the book were very familiar to her.

Holes: read that one too, but it's been awhile.

Balzac and The Little Chinese Seamstress: I read that one, but again, it's been awhile.

So.Be.It was the first book I was able to read all the way through right after I had DD. I remember reading it in snatches between nursing sessions. I couldn't put it down, couldn't wait for the ending.

I'm currently rereading Pride and Prejudice for my book club.

Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt (one of my favorites from long ago)

from Amazon: (Library Journal) McCourt is the eldest of eight children born to Angela Sheehan and Malachy McCourt in the 1920s. The McCourts began their family in poverty in Brooklyn, yet when Angela slipped into depression after the death of her only daughter (four of eight children survived), the family reversed the tide of emigration and returned to Ireland, living on public assistance in Limerick. McCourt's story is laced with the pain of extreme poverty, aggravated by an alcoholic father who abandoned the family during World War II. Given the burdens of grief and starvation, it's a tribute to his skill that he can serve the reader a tale of love, some sadness, but at least as much laughter as the McCourts' "Yankee" children knew growing up in the streets of Limerick. His story, almost impossible to put down, may well become a classic. A wonderful book; strongly recommended for readers of any age.

One of the best books I have ever read is 90 minutes in heaven. It really makes you think about life and what our purpose is to others and what God's purpose is for us here on earth. It is a very short read, but wonderful. The authors are Don Piper and Cecil Murphey. Enjoy and thanks for a chance at the RAOK!
