I also have a first grader and we use the sentence method. We use the words in a sentence or else I'll give him a visual example by showing him the item that goes with the word.
ok write out the word on index cards now fold them in half the but them in a box a shoe box or tissue box will due then have him pull out the word and hand you the folded card then tell him the word and have him write it down orspell out loud if he gets it right he can put a sticker or happy face whatever on the card when he gets it right like 10 times or 3 whatever the card is "retired" to an envie on the side of te gox at the end of the month the cards on the side get 1 more "test" and if they are known then they can be "retired" for good or quarterly whatever really if he dosnt know the word it goes back in th box

Those foam bath tub letters...make a game of hunting out the correct letters and slapping them up on the side of the tub/tile!
There were many great ideas, it was very hard to pick just one. In the end I am going with OneHotMomma's post, I like the twist on flashcards where you get to hold it if you get it right and the game ends when you are holding all of them. Tomorrow is a spelling test, so we will try this method tonight to study!
