HCW MATH IS FUN

I don’t know about you, but I HATED the dreaded word problems from algebra. I remember suffering endless hours over them. Do you remember these???

A train leaves the train station at 2:00 p.m. Its average rate of speed is 90 mph. Another train leaves the same station a half hour later. Its average rate of speed is 120 mph. If the second train follows the same route on a parallel track to the first, how many hours will it take the second train to catch the first?

Now as much as I hated these, this is the :transportation2: forum and it only makes sense to “do” one of these ourselves. Although I PROMISE this one will be fun and not nearly as much of a headache as the ones we had to do back in school…yuck!

So here's my HCW mathematical word problem:

Two identically awesome potluck envies leave Cincinnati, OH at exactly the same time going to two completely different locations. Each envie is expected to make numerous stops at different locations, but both envies should travel approximately the same total distance in miles. How long will it take for the envies to return to Cincinnati and which one will arrive first?

This will be a basic train. The envies are 25 coupon potluck envies. When you receive the envie, you will take out what you want as well as any expired/soon to expire coupons (coupons that expire within 2 weeks), bring the envie back up to at least the 25 coupon minimum (following the requirements below) and send it back out within 48 hours of receiving the envie.

Once the winning team is announced, I will contact the loosing team via PM with a very simple task request. This task will be small, require a minimal time commitment and nothing costly (at most a few extra coupons). In the end, it will be just that, a request. I'm really hoping you'll participate in it, but I'll understand if you are unable to.

TO RIDE

*You must be riding less than three trains. On HCW, you may only ride 3 trains at once. If you are riding 3 trains, we'll catch you next time.

*You must be a member of the Trader group on HCW and have an iTrader rating of 5 or more with NO negative ratings and an updated wish listed.

* You need to post to this thread that you want a ticket AND send me a PM with (without doing both you will NOT get a ticket):

*You must post when you receive and when you mail your envies. Since it is a competition, I want to make sure we all can keep track of where the envies are going!

ENVIE REQUIREMENTS

* NO JUNK!! Therefore, no meds, no booze, no baby and no oddball products that very few members will use unless you have an EXACT wishlist match. An EXACT match is exactly that… if I say on my wishlist $0.75/1 Superpretzels x 7/31/09, then $0.50/2 nor $0.75/1 x 5/31/09 are exact matches.

* Limit of one copy of a coupon unless that coupon is an exact match. Extras are always welcomed, just watch your postage!

*Printables, store-specific coupons, BTFE, Campbell’s Labels, Coke Codes, Pamper Points, etc., are okay to send ONLY if the member specifically states that they can use them. Rebates and TMF forms are fine to include (just be sure they can be used in the state the receiver is in!).

*ALL coupons in an envie must have at least two weeks before they expire. So if I’m mailing an envie on 5/1/09 then all coupons in the envie must expire on or after 5/16/09.

*When mailing, you MUST put your username and “HCW Math IS Fun” on the outside of the enive.

Remember, that when you sign up to join this train, not only are you agreeing to the specific guidelines of this train but the train rules as posted HERE in general. Failing to follow the rules of the trains or not sending an envelope falls under a bad trade. You can be reported for this and be listed as a bad trader.

FINAL NOTES

I will take riders until Saturday afternoon or once I get 20 riders, whichever comes first. Once I get the rider lists, I hope to post the two lists Monday or Tuesday and mail Tuesday or Wednesday. I need the extra time to set the lists up so that they are traveling the "exact" number of miles We want this "math problem" to "work"

This style train can take a little longer especially if you're used to simple style trains of one time mailings. Please don't sign up if you can't be patient.

Word problems were always horrible. I don’t remember much cheering going on during math class, but thankfully this isn’t math class…so let’s have some SERIOUS FUN with this!

The "money" train's envie will travel a total of 5,313 miles and the "huge savings" train envie will travel a total of 5,290 miles. So the difference between the two trains in distance is ONLY 23 miles.

It is up to YOU to see who's team can make it back to Cincinnati the fastest. Distance WILL definitely NOT be a factor!!! The first team to get their envie back to Cincinnati first will be declared the winner.

Remember that even though we want to get these envies to their next destination quickly, quality coupons are also important. I don't want to see a train derailed because of an incomplete envie.

We see that there was no difference in travel time for the first leg...they both got there the same day...what will happen in leg #2???
