Both Season 1 and Season 2 are available on DVD. Season 2 just came out today. Both are available at Walmart.com for $20 each.

Netflix does have Season 1 but when I checked it said very long wait. Others here have gotten it from Netflix though.

Last night, I couldn't sleep, and found episode three on at 2 am., so I stayed up to watch. I fell asleep, and again, did not get to see the whole thing. Aarrgghh. Hope it comes out on Netflix or DVD soon so I can catch up on what I missed.

So much I want to discuss, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone who didn't watch the same parts I did.
I'm going to be so bummed when Season 2 is finished.

We got to see Season 1 when they re-ran it right before Season 2 started. The first thing I told DH was that it was obviously the "Upstairs Downstairs" for a new generation -- the programs are so similar. If I remember correctly, Upstairs Downstairs started a few years earlier, but eventually even wove the Titanic into the story line. That is where Downton Abbey started.
Watched several seasons of Upstairs Downstairs, until I went off to college and they turned it into such a tangled soap opera even my mother lost interest.
If you want an interesting study in plagiarism, you might want to watch the 1942 movie "Mrs. Miniver." TCM aired it this past weekend in its annual "31 Days of Oscar." The Downton Abbey scene where Maggie Smith does the right thing, giving away the award at the rose show is lifted straight out of the 1942 movie. DH and I were roaring when we saw it. The Downton Abbey writers must have thought no one would notice!

Don't worry, Season 3 won't be far behind. The Brits finished Season 2 quite a while ago, and already know how it ends. They were filming Season 3 before Season 2 aired here.
Everyone will be so sick of it by the time it is over, they won't film another Upstairs Downstairs for another generation!

I got to go back to my mom's after my doctor appt. to finish the last episode of Season 1 and then DH called me and I had to leave to help him, so I only got to watch half. I am dying to see how it ends and then watch all the Season 2 episodes on my DVR :-)

How it ends? You know soap operas never "end." They are always cliff-hangers!

I found out I can watch it online on the PBS website, woohoo. There's also lots of background information on the show, actors, characters, etc.

Season 3 will be a showdown between Oscar-winning grande dames
Good news, fans: A third season of "Downton" is already in the works. Season 3 began filming this month and is set to debut in the U.K. in September. (PBS hasn't announced a U.S. premiere date yet.) And we already know Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess is going to have some competition next season: Film legend Shirley MacLaine has signed on to play Cora's mother Martha, who arrives at the estate ready to be yet another thorn in the side of the Countess. Two Oscar-winning legends battling for control of Downton... the servants had better make sure the fine china is put somewhere out of harm's way.

So what did everyone think of the last show? It was great to see 2 hours worth at once.
