I had sanity once upon a time I promise. It was just so long agoooo that I can't remember it
.
I hate it, but can't seem to stop watching it for the snark factor. I do think it is ruining couponing for those of us do it it correctly and don't buy massive amounts of items. Like others have said, there are a ton of people out there now with no clue what they are doing and it is frusterating for those of us who have honed our craft over several years.
Like, others, I am tired of people calling me an extreme couponer when I score a good deal on something. I'm not an extreme couponer-I'm just a smart shopper.
I haven't watched it, but after reading all about it, have much better things to do on Wed night than give TLC my time.
The other day I was in Target, I had about 15 or so coupons, and the couple behind me were making comments about 'those extreme couponers' Maybe it was the time o month, but I got really aggetated by the comment, so I turned around and said No, I am NOT an Extreme Couponer, just someone trying to make ends meet. 4 boxes of Kashi cookies is extreme?? Want me to break down the math for you? I can see if I bought 50 boxes, now thats Extreme. But not 4. 2 Deodorants... yeah, real extreme.
I just smiled and told them to have a nice day when I paid $10.xx (on what was close to $35 before coupons!!)

From what I understand, the fraud issue is as follows (feel free to correct if I am mistaken):
At least one of the Extreme Couponers from TLC was caught *potentially* using coupons fraudulently-- ie: Buying a different size than what is allowed on the coupon or a different product, such as using a body wash coupon on body lotion. I'm pretty sure the link to this story can be found somewhere on HCW...(I'll try to find the link later). As I recall, there wasn't a definitive yes/no to whether the coupons had been used fraudulently because they didn't see absolutely every item being rung up, nor the register receipt, but the evidence was fairly compelling.
As for me, I too have received the looks/glares/stares from employees and other customers who suddenly think I'm a freak because I carry a small 4x6 box in my cart near my purse. However, since this show started, more people have actually been intrigued by why there is a small box in my cart and want to know more about how to save money on their grocery bill. One lady actually admitted that it was a smart idea because whenever she'd put coupons in her purse, she lose them, forget she had them, they'd expire before they were used, or they'd get torn up somewhere in there, so keeping them in one place was actually pretty clever!![]()
Has the perception of couponers changed since the advent of this show? Yeah, but so doesn't everything else when something odd/taboo/not often thought about is brought to light on "reality" (HAHA!) television. In the end, I have absolutely no problem sharing what I know with them and am actually really grateful to do so because in the end, it's about helping your fellow man. :talking3:

I think I'm most afraid of what results the show might produce. Maybe mfg giving out lower $ coupons, since they think they will be doubled. Stores producing more limits on the qty you can purchase.
My husband asked me today how do those gals buy a couple shopping carts for only $4. I explained to him that all the shows I've watched they have had the luxury of double coupons. Something I don't have access to.

Actually, she flat out admits it by saying this:
I want to stop being the Scapegoat. I used a Buddig Deli cut for a 12/16 ounce packet for a 2 ounce packet because the numbers matched. The coupons went through at the register and I did not have any problem.

Saving money ~ it's a way of life, not an attitude
Personally, I don't "hate" the show but I think that it gives newbies (such as myself and many others) unrealistic expectations of what to expect from couponing. We see these other people out there, saving $500+ on their grocery bills and being able to afford a trip to Europe for dh's 40th birthday and we want that! Honestly, who wouldn't?
My DH asked me the other night if we could expect to save that kind of money and have a stockpile like some of these people. I explained to him that I'm in it to have a stockpile of foods so that if the need arises we can feed our family for a month (or even 2 weeks). I told him that I'm happy if I can save $50-$100 a trip on our groceries and I am.
I think that there should be a disclaimer at the beginning of that show that reads "Your experiences may vary...results not typical of normal couponer" or something like that.
PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE FEEDBACK!
VERY GOOD IDEA!!
That way, you squash the newbie misconception of "results are typical". I still have no clue how you can get that much and spend that little, but then again, I don't know who in the world needs 87 bottles of mustard just because "it's on sale and I make .05 a bottle" either LOL!![]()
