Pfft, I don't even let other adults borrow my car. I did once. ONCE!

I doubt the girl asking or your daughter meant to be impertinent. More likely, they don't understand what is at stake. Not having had the responsibility rest on their shoulders, they don't know. At best, they may have thought well, we pay for insurance and it costs money and it covers the vehicle and whatever happens. They probably had no idea insurance might have a rule that says anything like someone not a member of the immediate family who drives it and has an accident might not be covered in certain circumstances such as being under 25. Friend may even have assumed her insurance she pays for her car would cover any damages. They certainly don't have any idea if anyone, even the covered driver, drives that car and has an accident while driving it, the damages due to other people and property might easily exceed the amount the policy will pay, and then the owners of the car will be next in line to fork it up. I didn't even understand this until I was in my 30s and knew someone it happened to. Perhaps it might be good to either explain some of the details of the situation to your daughter and her friend, or even better, see if you can get an insurance agent to do it.

We went through something along these lines when DD#1 was first away at college. She let a friend drive her car, and friend caused an accident. Lucky for me, her dad had given her the car. For added fun times, he had never put the car into daughter's name or obtained insurance in her name for the car. What ended up happening he had to drive over and pick up the car from where they impounded it because the friend said the car belonged to my daughter and her name wasn't anywhere on insurance or title. Then he had to go to court when she went in for her ticket for failure to yield and say he had lent the car to the friend so they wouldn't prosecute her for driving a stolen vehicle. Then he had to sign with his insurance if anyone not on the policy drove a vehicle of his and had a wreck, he'd have to pay out of his own pocket for everything relating to the wreck. His insurance went through the roof after that, he said.

Heck, I won't even switch cars with my husband! I did loan a car to a coworker once. I really didn't want to do it but she only took it about a mile away and it was on the military base. I still felt funny about doing it though.

BUT, WE paid every cent on daughter's car and are STILL paying for her insurance since she's in school.
Then you're the one that has the final say over the car.

    Um...no. I wouldn't do it...and I wouldn't allow it.

That said...a few years ago, when my oldest daughter was in her mid-twenties, she loaned her car to a guy she was dating. He said he'd take her to work and then spend the day looking for a job, but he needed a car to get around in (she was in her "picking losers" stage!). While she was at work, she got a call, saying that her car had been impounded. It seems that this jobless, car-less young man was also driving (HER CAR!) after having his license suspended. AND...he was stupid enough to run a red light, which is how he got pulled over in the first place. Oh...and of course, when got pulled over, he got out of the car and ran, making matters (and charges) worse.

Yep...I'm hoping she learned her lesson about loaning her car!

I forgot to add...she wasn't living with me at the time. She had a full-time job, and was paying for the car and the insurance, so I had no say-so over this. Besides, I didn't find out until she called me, crying about it!

your dd needs to learn now not to loan out her car no matter what.

Financial liability, yes!! My friend loaned her motorcycle to her own brother, there was a horrible accident involving the passenger having surgery and rehab. My friend, who was home sleeping during the accident, got sued and she had to pay!
