    I'm so sorry, Renee.

ETA: I quit smoking just over 6 years ago. I know how hard it is, but I also know there's a point where it all falls into place & the desire becomes completely dwarfed by the knowledge of how much better you feel & by the fact that you did it! And reaching that point doesn't take nearly as long as you fear it will.

Are you designing your very own god...

I am so sorry for your loss. I went through the same thing with both my FIL and father. They were both disabled with complications from COPD and I watched them both suffocate - it was horrible to not be able to do anything. I will never forget my dad's desperation and panic and he struggled to breathe. Now my MIL is living her life tethered to an oxygen tank also and was forced to go into assisted living from the home that she loved because she is not able to care for herself anymore because of complications from smoking. My DS lost both of his grandfathers to COPD and now a grandmother who is failing fast - so sad. I promised to buy him a car at age 21 if he never smokes and I mean it. I don't want to lose any more family due to COPD.

Thank you everyone who has read the post and for the condolences. I really appreciate it.

Meggers - What you said is SO wise. Really happy you were able to stop. Have you (or any of you others that have been able to quit) ever calculated how much money you've saved by NOT buying smokes??

Enginerd - Horrible that you and your family have been through this multiple times. I'm sorry for all those you've lost to this and for your MIL who is suffering now. I'm sure they had no idea what lay ahead for them when they started smoking.

I have never smoked a cigarette in my life.... and never will. My dad died in 2000 a few weeks before his 50th b-day..... He was a very heavy smoker -- started as a teen and refused to quit. He had serveral heart attacks and a few strokes. That is what lead to his death. My MIL died 4 years ago-- lung cancer --- again a very heavy smoker. My DH smokes to this day. I so wish he would quit. Not for me, for our kids. I so don't want them to watch him suffer some day for his bad choice. It brings me to tears to even think about it. He just doesn't want to quit. Shortly after his Mom died, he thought about taking classes at our local hospital to help quit but never went :(. Maybe someday. Again, so sorry for the loss of your Mom, to you and your family.
