Thumpdown What do you do when you find expired product(s) on the shelf?

Please list which store you're at and what you usually do.

I'm anal about checking exp dates since I stockpile.

I find expired products in a lot of stores, at least once a week.

Just bought some sunscreen that was expired 2-11 from Walmart. Returned it and went back for another, guess what, most of the shelf was expired!! And we live in FL where you use it all year round!@!@

I was tempted to unload the shelf and leave them on the floor, because when i told the cust svc rep, she said that was the manuf. date, like with beer, duh!!
Can't wait to hear what you think it the best thing to do?

I have seen quite a few expired products at Kroger lately. I have emailed a few of the manufacturers to let them know, but honestly many of them don't seem to be too worried about it.

If I somehow purchased one without checking, I am not sure what I would do. I am not sure if the store would believe me unless there was a shelf full of expired product, which sometimes there is not.

My local Winn Dixie has a big problem with keeping their yogurt in date. I buy Dannon there every week and it's the rare occasion when I don't see containers past the sell by date on the shelf. I take them up to the cashier and loudly proclaim they are past date. AND that it's an habitual problem.

I've had the same issue at Publix too, rarely though.

I've found expired products at all 3 of my Grocery stores(Shoppers, Giant, and Safeway).

At Giant they had stuff that was 6mos-1 yr expired...the first time, I took it to the service desk and emailed their corporate office. They retrained their store managers and the employees(or so the email said). The second time, I took the products to the service desk, the associate thought it was hilarious that stuff was expired. I emailed their corporate and ended up talking to the manager of the store on the phone because of the expired AND the response of their store associate.

At Safeway the items were 3 mos expired and I took them to the service desk, the associate apologized profusely.

At Shoppers the items were 1 yr -18mos expired. I took them to the service desk and asked for a manager. The manager, at first, tried to give me the expired stuff for free(not happening), and then offered me the 4 of the same product(not expired) that I was buying, for free. He then sent an associate to the aisle while I was still in the store, and had them check all the dates in that aisle.

    I actually purchased frozen burgers from walmart over 1 month expired called the great value number on the package and the mangager from walmart called me and told me to bring it back for a refund or a exchange. He was very nice and apologized. I did return them and took the refund. We already ate a package of the burgers and then I realized the second was out of date. I thought they were horrible my Dh thought they were ok though {BARF!!}

Depends on what kind of mood I'm in. If I'm in a hurry I'll probably do nothing. But I have mentioned the expired products on more than one occasion. Once I kept going to a store to buy tortillas. Finally when they were expired by 2 months, I said something. By then I was really angry. But really some stores here have so much expired stuff, it would be an unpaid career for me to report it all. I do try to check the expiration dates. And I probably do 98% of the time. Once in a while I do screw up.

I have noticed this a lot at Winn Dixie too, and with their yogurt. I even ate some of it once, and didn't feel so great the next day. When I went to eat another container of the same flavor, I noticed it was over a month expired! I think I just threw it away because it was only the one pack but I was pretty grossed out. Plus it was partially my fault for not checking.

I also bought some Juicy Juice boxes (a huge quantity) and several packs of those were expired--WAY expired. If it was just a week or two, no problem, but these were out of date by several months. I returned them the store and got my money back. I always check EVERYTHING now.

I always report expired stuff and so far it's been taken off the shelf or the manager/cashier at least seems to care.

There is one local store we have around that I actually look for expired products since they sell them cheap. These are recent expired so I now take note of about to expire items and hope they're still there a day after they expire. Most of these have Best By Dates so I don't worry about it being expired. I have scored Boursin cheese for .99 which is reg 6.99, Dole salad for 1.00, reg 2.99 (with .75 tearpad = .25), Tropicana OJ 59 fl oz for .99 and a lot more items. If there's expired that were missed, I just tell cashier and depending on their mood, I get them really cheap. This has helped me a lot to keep within food budget for stuff we want to eat.

I either just leave it or if I see a worker I will tell them about it.
