Re: Dang, I hope I'm this brave when I'm that old. One factor (of many, agreed) makes criminal behavior more likely to happen. Willingness to be the victim (not fight back) and bystanders to look the other way (or not get involved).
I certainly can see the woman put her own safety at risk in striking back but how many criminals expect non-action. She was probably going on pure instinct and not weighing the risk to self.
