Default Paying more for GC's than they're worth?

Why on Earth do people pay more for a gift card than it's actually worth? (with the exception of the Target bullseye lego dog...that's just cool!)

Someone satisfy my curiosity and explain this to me. Even if you were getting it for a family member for Christmas, you can go to almost any website and buy a gift card and have it shipped free, not to mention most stored have a huge display of gift card selections.

    Here's an example: auction

There are different ways people can get rewards back on purchases. When the rewards outweigh the "extra" paid, people will pay more than the value.

Well, one reason could be stolen ebay/PP accounts. Just sayin.' If someone is spending your money, the sky's the limit.

Are you designing your very own god...
or is God designing His very own you?

Ebates is one. Sometimes Paypal runs promos where you buy something you get a % back. (went to their site and don't see anything currently to show you)

Ebay has ebay bucks. Their featured offer right now is to earn 10% from featured sellers. Every purchase I make, I get a small percent back. I don't have much since all I ever buy is coupons, and that's rare for me to do anymore.

I am old fashioned - if I need a gift card.... I go to the store and pick one out and have them put the money on it right then and there and have it in my hot little hand... don't believe in buying it on ebay, HOPING it doesn't get lost in the mail, and end up paying as much for it as if I walked in the store and got it...

I remember asking that same question and one reason I was given (although it doesn't seem it would apply much) is some people purchase them who can't get out and buy their own and they shop online with them.

Not for me though. I did, however buy a bunch of gift cards on Ebay last year right after Christmas, at big discounts and have been using them all year. I plan to do the same thing this year. People are willing to part with a $50 gift card for $40 or sometimes less after Christmas - I guess because they want the cash.

Hmmm....good thought - I will have to check ebay out AFTER Christmas and see if I can find any good Gift card deals like you did, soccermom :) (By the way, I think we follow all the same threads) :)

Doglover - if you decide to buy some giftcards later - please get in touch because I have some tips.

I was thinking the same thing about going from thread to thread right after you.
