CHAT Would you let your daughter dress like this?

I saw a photo of Angelina Jolie's 4-year old daughter, Shiloh, decked out in boyish clothes and combat boots. I read that she likes wearing boy stuff and for the moment, identifies more with boys than girls and they let her wear what she wants.

When they were that young I doubt I'd have let my older girls wear something like those boots simply because I wasn't secure enough with who I was as a parent then and wouldn't have wanted to put up with the flak. They didn't care about specific styles until they were much older anyway so I doubt anything extreme would have come up.

The 3rd one has always had clearly defined ideas of what she wanted to wear and sometimes got made fun of when younger because she still loved to wear dresses. I encouraged to wear what SHE liked and told her it was great to be unique but I think I'd have balked at something like that outfit even though I don't think it would be right for me to do so.

    What do you think?

Not sure if I am allowed to post a photo so here's a link:

Parents of boys if you want to participate, just turn the tables. Would you let your 4 year old son dress in something more typically thought of as "feminine?"

I don't know that I care what her clothing is...but I'd probably insist she wear shoes that actually fit her...and those look too big to me.

My 4 year olds..might want to choose the clothing they wear each day..(sometimes) but I am the one that buys it for them...so whatever they are wearing is a result of something I purchased.

    Sure!

Although, I agree with CWM. I would at least insist on the combat boots that fit right ;)

Honestly, I would much rather my daughter wear this than some of the NASTY looking stuff for girls these days.... Thongs, padded bathing suit tops, etc... all marketed to 5-10ish year old girls.

Eh, she isn't hurting anyone. But as others said, shoes that fit are essential, otherwise they are unsafe.

When I read the title of the thread, I thought the picture would be some teeny- tiny inappropriate outfit. Not sure why boys' clothes on a girl is a big deal.

    I'm happy that:
    1. She's actually fully clothed.
    2. The outfit isn't something you'd see at a strip club.

She's a tomboy. I grew up one, and I turned out fine. My parents dressed me in boys' clothes, I played video games, I collected baseball cards. I actually wore a miniature Detroit Tigers uniform to career day in elementary school. In high school, if I wore a dress at all, I wore combat boots with it. I'm now a somewhat normal, happily married mom who would rather wear jeans and a t-shirt, but can totally rock a cocktail dress and heels. ;)

Much better than dressing her like a pageant girl with make up and hoochied out :) I see nothing wrong with it other than the shoes. Someday she'll look back and say Mom, how did you let me go in public like that....and that's the worst thing I see about all of this lol

I would certainly let my DD wear this. There is nothing wrong with wearing clothes you are comfortable in. I am almost 30 and I wore a dress to my second wedding not my first (I wore leather pants and a T-shirt to that one) But that wedding dress will probably be the last time I ever wear a dress. I wear Jeans and a T-shirt. If I need to get dressy I'll wear a nice shirt and black boots with a low heel.

Unfortunately for me my DD prefers pink and dresses, which I would never pick out for her on my own, but she likes to wear it so *shrugs* why not

My DS at age 4 would still put on the few high heeled shoes and boots I owned and walk around the house. Experimenting is all part of growing up. Now would I let my DS wear a prom dress to school.. probably not, but for halloween if he wanted too then I say Go for it!

What I wouldn't do is let my toddler wear heels (thinking specifically of little Suri Cruise-- I think). Combat boots and gender swap clothes, no problem.

I was a tomboy and looked like a boy when i was young. I see no problem with except those boots look a little big. I can guarentee they'd be laced better so my kid didn't walk out of them...other than that...it's fine IMO
