Default Going to the teacher's house for a swim party after school

Just curious what people's responses are to this...and if anyone actually lives where "it's no big deal" so to speak.

My daughter is in third grade. Her 2nd grade teacher (female) called this morning. Apparently she called twice last night but I didn't know...and didn't check the voice mail.

She had promised the kids a swimming party last May...but it just never happened. So she's decided to do it tonight...and wants to take the kids (as in she and another teacher drive them ) over to her house to have a swim party. There is 11 in her class.

I didn't know so she was wondering if my daughter could wear her daughter's swimming suit...or if I could possibly drive over to the school and drop it off. Then she'll drive the kids back about 2 hours later (not sure where...that I guess I will out..when I go with the swimming suit ) and I'll pick her up.

There going to be swimming and having hot dogs and chips.

I'm not from this little town and I must say sometimes things amaze me. And this is one of those days.

How very odd! I would stay as far away from that as I could get...

I would only allow it if I were there with her. I would not feel comfortable allowing my child to ride with someone I do not know, nor would I be okay with her being at someones house without me.

Hmmmm I'm not sure how I would feel about this. Growing up I lived in a small town and we did things like this all the time, but now that I live in a much much larger area... I don't think I'd be ok with it. At least not with out me there.

My daughter's first grade teacher had all of the kids over for a end of the year party to her house. I felt fine with it. She was a great teacher and I felt comfortable with her. I thought it was a nice thing for her to do and the kids always look forward to her end of the year party.

Do what you feel comfortable with. If you feel comfortable with the teacher and all then let her go...if not then don't let her go.

That is odd...I grew up in a small town and no teacher ever did anything like this. I also have alot of teacher friends and not one has ever had a party at their house for the kids. The only thing I could think of is if the teacher's daughter is the same age and she is truly doing it for more of a socializing for her own daughter. Very odd

When I was in 8th grade, 7-8 of the girls (including myself) went over to our female science teachers house for a sleepover...she had just lost her husband a few weeks before and we did it to cheer her up. My mom was a little hesitant but it was a small town and the teacher was 2 minutes from my grandma's house. I enjoyed it. I'd say, do what you're comfortable with...if you could go to be a chaperone...maybe that would make it better...? I hate short notice on things like that tho...so I'd be a little annoyed.

I'm not creeped out by the idea or anything, but my immediate concern would be the adult to kid ratio and how many competent eyes would be watching kids around the water as well as considering whether they were trained in resuscitation. Two adults with 11 young children around a pool, no way, but I'll admit that I have what may be an irrational fear of drowning that I project onto others. Either way, even though I'm usually pretty laid back and try not to be "that" parent, this is an area where I probably would be unless I were able to attend, myself.

I let her go but I would take her and stay. I would never let my child be in a swimming pool at that age without me sitting there and watching like a hawk. I just now this year let me son (age 12) swim without me there. There are some teachers that are weird and like to fraternize with students but I don't think this is the case here since the students are so young. My SIL was let go at her teaching job (high school) because she was fraternizing with the students too much, letting them come over to her house, etc.

I once had a 5th grade teacher that would invite us over to her house and teach us math. It was more like a tutoring session though. We enjoyed it and she gave us milk and cookies as a treat. It was actually kind of fun. She was a sweet little lady who was single, so I think it made her feel good to do that.

I wouldn't be freaked out about a swim party, but 2nd grade is kind of young to be having a lot of kids. I would be more worried about their safety and the pool.
