I wouldn't let my child go because of the swimming issues. I don't trust other adults to watch my kids swimming when they were younger because of what happened one time. Only my husband and I would bring them swimming after that. One time my SIL and her husband brought our kids swimming when they were little. I thought we could trust them and my daughter ended up a little far out in the lake and THEN they noticed. It could have been very scary so since then we never trusted anyone again to bring them swimming.

I think it would depend on the teacher and the circumstances. How well do you know the teachers/chaperones? How comfortable are you with your daughter swimming without you there? The list goes on and on. I wouldn't be excessively alarmed if I knew the teacher, had a relationship of sorts with her, and there were going to be other children and adults there. Would there have been a problem if you had asked to be present as an additional chaperone? If she said no, then I would have a problem.

This post brought back a memory from childhood... in 5th grade, my male teacher, Mr. Reynolds, had a bulletin board set up like a race track to track how many books/pages we read. One lap around the track and we got to go out to lunch with him. There were always 4 students who went. We would all pile into his car and head to McDonald's or Taco Bell, whatever the consensus was. I don't think this would EVER be permitted in today's world and I certainly wouldn't allow it when my girls get into school.
