Default Geico VS. State Farm - Opinions

I am thinking about switching from State Farm to Geico for my homeowners insurance (it's cheaper).... Any opinions, feedback, experience with Geico when you have a claim??

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

DH and I have GEICO and have been very pleased with them. DH was involved in a multi-car pileup on the highway a couple of years ago and working with their claims service and legal team went very smoothly.

I have no experience with State Farm to compare them to, only a regional insurance company (Erie) and a few years with Progressive. I prefer GEICO much more than either company I've mentioned, and the GEICO rates are much lower for us.

Geico's rates are excellent and I do shop them out every year. Their customer service is phenomenal and we did have a claim a couple of years ago. I felt that they took a littler longer to settle than I would have preferred (about 4 weeks) but they always phoned me to keep me in the loop.

We're considering switching from State Farm because they've jerked us all over the map on a claim. Glad to hear positive things about GEICO. It was on our list to compare.

I've been with State Farm for 18 years. They took care of two recent claims. The one a guy backed out of an auto body shop into us while waiting at a red light. Since State Farm does not institute new policies in MA, a rep came to our house pretty quick and cut the check.

The second accident Dh is waiting to get into court to fight (its been close to a year since the accident, he will not get into court any earlier than 3/10). He had to back up while trying to turn left because there were a bunch of illegally parked cars (which is common living near a funeral home and shops). He couldn't see and had to back up. The idiot behind him refused to move as DH beeped. This accident raised our car insurance from 800 to 1200 a year. If he can get this removed, State Farm will refund the $400 difference and remove 3 points from his license.

I've had great agents and poor agents. Overall, I've been satisfied. We pay less now with the accident than we would starting fresh with a new insurance company. Once we leave the state (and we will), I plan to push State Farms hand. If they buck, they lost a 20 year customer.

Geico's home owner's insurance is underwritten by Traveler's - we have had them for 10 years and been very satisfied. We also have Geico for our car insurance.

We were happy with Geico until recently. Someone ran into my moms car while it was stopped at a four-way stop. The person at fault ended up being with Geico after recently transferring from another Ins company. Everything was fine when Geico thought it was another company paying. Once we found out that Geico would be paying(the ppl never disclosed to us that they switched and it took a few days to find who they were insured with) they sent a letter saying that my mom should not lend her car out to anybody(friends, family,non-residents) because that will make her an preferred risk. They did fix it immediately thought, so that was the good thing. But it was rather insulting to send that letter considering that my mom has been with them over 10 years has never made a claim, never been in an accident, no tickets. Also when a deer ran into her car she fixed her car out of pocket $500, eventhought she could have had it fixed for free throught Geico. The letter made it seem like it was my moms fault for letting a relative drive her car when her car got hit while it was completely stopped at a stop sign. And the person at fault knows that road well considering they live the next street up.

We HAD Allstate and I hit a person that had Geico-he ran a stop sign. I broke my foot and he had nothing wrong with him....I got a lawyer-had physical theropy for 2 months (broken foot was missed in xray and never cast)...Accident happend 11-17-04, last dr visit was 5-20-05....
Here are the 2 things that stick in my mind-

    1. Allstate lied about how our insurance works. We had medical coverage through Allstate (yes auto) and they said that they ONLY had to pay the copay after our health insurance...not true, they were to pay the FULL medical bills (this is a medical policy that covers anyone in the car during an accident).

    2. Geico jerked us around and it took almost 2 years to settle. Part of that might have been my idiot lawyer/firms fault though we are not sure. But it isn't like Geico was pushing to hurry up either.

After the BS that happened with Allstate and they FLAT OUT LIED to us about what they will pay we decided that no longer will we keep Allstate. We asked our Lawyer who they suggest, meaning who is the best to deal with. They said that Allstate is the worst with Geico a close second. They said the best was USAA (which is for military and you can qualify so X years after you get out). We used to have USAA when my DH was in the navy, but at this point we were too far out of service to qualify. He also said that if you are the one that CAUSED the accidents then they are good insurance companies, because they will pay out as little as possible-costing you less. But that holds true if you are trying to get money from them-good luck with that.

We have Amica now and LOVE Them. We have had 2 accidents so far (idiot SON!). They have paid both of the people my kid hit quickly and the one guy CLAIMED he had $7000 in doctor bills which is TOTAL BS-I didn't have that much in dr bills (including PT) for my broken foot, but they paid it! I know they paid quickly because everytime they finish a claim with one of them they send us a letter saying how much they paid total. My son just had his second accident in August, luckily it was a big semi truck that rolled into him and the other driver wasn't hurt (no one was really hurt besides bumps, bruises and broken glasses)-however the claim against our insurance was over $4000 to Sefa paid in less than 1 month and $200 to Bojangles (he hit thier trash can) paid in less than 2 weeks.

I don't know, I have been looking into switching myself. We have had State Farm forever, never have accidents or tickets, I think my last ticket was like 1999, hubby hasn't had any, and their rates just keep going up. No accidents for either of us, I am really sick of State Farm just raising their rates every time they have a "catastrophic" year.

Any more I am tired of paying $125 for full coverage on both of our vehicles a month, I think it is ridiculous. But I know it's higher because one of the vehicles is an off road dodge ram.

Not being nosy but what does everyone else pay is it in the ballpark? I haven't shopped car insurance for a long time
