I'm not really 'hot under the collar' but kind-of.
I had $24 in coupons today at a feed store - not a place that deals a lot with coupons, I don't think. The coupons (as most do) state 'customer is responsible for sales tax'. Well, as I understand it, that applies in areas where sales tax is charged on the amount deducted by the q's.
That is not the case here. In our state, when the amount is deducted, there is no tax on that portion.
Either this store is paying more in taxes than they need to, or they are keeping the extra. It's 'only' a couple of dollars, but this is a monthly thing, my trip to this store, so it adds up!
I don't want to get into a tussle with them - they are very helpful, and sometimes I have to return pet food b/c one of the brats won't eat it. I don't want to make a bad relationship, but I don't want to throw away money either.
He was adamant about it and I didn't know the legalese to explain it to him, so I just paid it. Any help for next time?
Thanks!

No, it's not me personally that doesn't have to pay sales tax. In this state, anyone who is using coupons,,,,,,,whatever amount is deducted from the total is also deducted from the taxable total.
No other store has tried to charge taxes - the registers automatically don't charge it. This is an old-fashioned register that they enter it manually, and being a feed store for animals, everything there is taxable (unlike most stores that have non-taxable items and registers that can tell the difference).

I'd just look up your state's sale tax information online and print it out for him.
Any idea how I locate something that discusses coupons? Thanks!

I tried typing 'OK sales tax information' on Yahoo. You could try Google as well.
This is what I found:
http://www.tax.ok.gov/oktax/orders/2006-12-07-04.pdf Just do a 'control F' on that page for 'coupon'. Not really sure if it's what you're looking for but it might just confuse the guy enough to win your case.
Or try this:

How much is the tax? What is the difference between what it is before coupons and after?
