Now im confused though i got these things in the mail from the mortgage companies, mortgage interest statement. Do I need to bring these when i file my taxes? Then i got one from the IRS statement for recipients of interest income. DO i need this one as well? we bought our house in 09. We did the first time homebuyers last year. I never received these sorts of things in the mail last year but have this year. I really have no clue what they are and if i need these when we file our taxes!
yes you need to take those with you. if you own a home, the interest income for that year (the interest you paid in 2010) is deductible under the long form (ie itemized deductions). if your itemized deductions are larger then your standard deduction (married, single, hoh, etc) then you take the larger amount.

itemized deductions include: mortgage interest, real estate taxes, donations, unreimbursed work expenses (varies by job and is a percentage), unreimbursed medical expenses (small percentage based on income), state taxes paid.....

and it is pretty easy to say that if it comes to you in the mail during tax time, there is a good chance you will need it for your taxes. it would be worth your time to look up "irs itemized deduction form" and take a good look at that form and see if there is anything more you qualify for, if anything....print it out, and write figures in it in pencil...

Thanks! Repped ya. I was a little lost on that because last year we didnt receive any of these papers. But at least now I know to hold onto them. Still waiting to see if the husband can get a power of attorney so i can do all the taxes at once. He has been super busy with his classes and stuff Im not sure if he has found time yet to go do that! On base they had it where they do simple taxes for free through feb 15. But i dont beleive mine would be considered simple! With his w-2 and mine and then these house documents. Ah well at least i know to take those papers with me when i go!

they still might consider a return with the itemized deductions simple. it is a standard form that most people use.

if he is full time military, work related expenses for him will be anything he purchases himself for class or to take with him when he goes on weekends...i am not for sure what else...maybe someone else on here that has a military spouse can toss out some work related expenses that you can consider...

Pink, A lot of information in this thread is wrong. This is from a CPA who is registered tax preparer for the IRS.

You can indeed claim your husband income tax immediately and then amend your return. You have to April 15th to file the amendment without additional fines or penalties. The question is if the money would be received quick enough the that IRS does not put a hold on the funds due to what you owe. Any money due past the 15th indeed can be subjected to penalty and interest.

Another issue you need to be aware is filing long form (itemization) is almost a red flag for the IRS to conduct an audit. The IRS is out for blood right now. We were audited for a move in 2007 late last year because we itemized. People at my husbands employer who claim more than five dependents were the issue of letters sent to his office. The IRS told his staff to immediately force down the deductions. I also see dual year amendments as a red flag for an audit. Personally, this is total crap. As long as the bill is settled with the IRS, they have no right to tell people how much to claim.

I disagree with Molly about the number to claim. If you have 3 people, claim 3. The biggest mistake people make is claiming 0. It is your money and the government charges interest when you owe. Do not give the government a free loan.

Tink, you can do all your filing with tax software. The benefit of a tax preparer is a body to answer to the IRS should you end up in an audit. However, if you make an effort to be as accurate as possible on your return and audited, the IRS will see that there was not intent of maliciousness or fraud with your taxes.
