Re: Which one is better?? I'm a CPA who hasn't practiced officially for ten years, but still do several tax returns for friends and family. I used Turbo Tax for years, until about five years ago when they had a licensing feature on the software that only allowed installation on one computer. Normally that wouldn't be a problem but my desktop crashed that year and I had to reinstall the software on my laptop and Turbo Tax made me pay for the software a second time. There was absolutely no way around it. The licensing issue made quite a stir and Turbo Tax dropped it the following year. I had already sworn to never use TT again and switched to Tax Cut. It took a little getting used to, but I've been very happy with Tax Cut and will continue to use it. I think it's a bit more user-friendly. I don't use the interview feature but go straight to inputting to the forms so I can't speak to which program's interview feature is more thorough.
One other pet peeve with Turbo Tax. For years, when dh and I were still in the CPA business, we would find great new tax prep software programs every few years that were really good yet inexpensive. Guess who bought them up each time? Intuit, owners of Turbo Tax. They bought out the smaller guys and jacked up the price for the professional version of TT which allowed users to prepare more than 10 returns.
HR Block Tax Cut has a premier edition which includes one state and five free efiles for $44.48 at Walmart. I think that may be cheaper than my renewal directly from Tax Cut so I will buy a new version.
BTW, I worked for H&R Block one year when I was in college. It's kinda scary how little a person can know about taxes and get a job there. My endorsement of the software in no way is an endorsement of the tax preparation service. My advice is, if your tax return is complicated enough that you cannot do it yourself with tax prep software, find a small CPA firm which probably has rates that are competitive with Block's. |
