I also did mystery shopping that I plan to report as self-employed income, but don't want to take the mileage expense (lowers my refund amount).
So I guess my question is.....I know I'm required to report income, but am I required to report expenses?
why would you NOT want to use the mileage option?
50+ cents a mile is HUGE!!!! from July-Dec of 08.

I guess I am confused on what you mean. If you report your expenses it will increase your refund, not reduce your refund.

I played with it on taxact and when I put the mileage in, my refund decreased. I think it's because my income is so low my refund is pretty much all EIC (and the stimulus that I didn't get over the summer). EIC increases until you make around 16,000. So the more income I can show until that amount would raise my refund.

Well, in answer to your original question, no you don't have to show expenses. But I am sending you a PM.

I started to file when I got my W2's the other day, now I think I have to wait for a form from unemployment? I'm confused. Does anyone else have experience with this?
You will get a Form 1099-G I got mine a week ago. San Antonio, TX
I hope this helps!

No, manufacturer rebates are not taxable.

I have heard yes and I have heard no. Can anyone help me out?

Home improvements are generally not deductible. If you had the purchase of it put onto a home equity loan, then the interest would be deductible. If you have a home office deduction, part of it would be deductible. If it was for a home that you rent out, it would be deductible. Also certain energy efficient home improvements will be deductible if they are done in 2009, but you are out of luck if they were done in 2008. Here is a list of the energy efficient deductions for 2009. Federal Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency : ENERGY STAR
