Maybe stores should only give the amount paid by the customer back instead of the value...If the sonicare toothbrushes were 30 minus the 15q then if product is returned, give back the $15. It'd still be a small inconvenience for the store to "recall" the q from the manufacturer but would cut down on fraudulent customers.

It's pretty rare that I return anything, usually only if it's defective/broken, or in the case of clothing, wrong size, so I would be quite upset if I didn't get "all" my money back. They can't give you the coupon back, since it's long gone. It wouldn't bother me to get it back on a gift card rather than cash, but I wouldn't want to be cheated out of my money either. I can't get that coupon back so either way, I'd be out.

Unfortunately for the rest of us who buy items to use and may have need of a return... that might actually be the easiest solution. With the adjustment that once the coupon is processed, odds are that it would be too difficult to process so you'd be out your coupon.

My Target barely lets you return with a receipt. Most coupons show up at the level of the item, and they only give you back what was actually paid that way. I've been told when all items and coupons are on the new UPC system, all coupons will apply that way. According to the assistant manager at my local Target, all stores have to purchase the new UPC database and be on that system "by law" by January first to prevent coupon fraud. On the other hand, they've not said anything to me about duplicates of the same coupon used on one shopping transaction. Maybe that memo has not filtered down yet to our store? If it does, I'm perfectly willing to do the same thing I do when the grocery says "One only at this price" or "Limit 2 with Ten Dollar Purchase". Line up the husband and kiddies with the duplicates.

Our stores already do that a lot around here. I even had to fight to get the full amount I paid back on one transaction. Overcharges are quite common at the store, and I was overcharged on a bottle of cleaner and didn't catch it at the register.
I went to the customer service desk and the clerk handed me virtually nothing in return. When I questioned her, she claimed I had doubled a $1 coupon to get the $1.89 item free and she had no intention of paying me for it. Although the chain allowed items to be free after coupon in other cities, this store abruptly refused to accept double coupons on those items, insisting you pay 89 cents after $1 coupon for the item.
I pointed out that I had purchased quite a number of items, and doubled $1 coupons on three of those -- not the one I used on the cleaner. (Of course, I also had to point out that instead of $1.89, I had been charged nearly $4 for the item!) She was quite snippy, and reluctantly gave me my money back -- less the coupon.

I don't believe that most big stores have the ability to go through all the coupons they receive and pull the ones for products that were returned. They give you a full refund for the item price because if they don't then they are making double money off a product(or double the amount of the coupon) which would be fraud on their part.

Couponing has become a huge "fad" right now and people commiting return fraud with and without coupons in the transaction has been happening for a very long time. Soon the "fad" will wear off and it will have a lasting affect but those committed to couponing the right way will still continue and will adjust to the new rules/policies that are created by stores and manufacturers alike.

I had this same issue at Target. I was using 4 bogo coupons for the dove deodorant deal. The cashier took 2 of the bogo coupons and said I couldn't use four even though I was purchasing 8 deodorants. She said that I can use one coupon per item and that I couldn't use the bogo coupon because I was getting the target gift cards. I kindly explain that the only coupon limitation would be if the coupon said" limit four like coupon per transasaction " which it didn't say. She called over a manager and "overrided the coupon" whatever that meant. This is the first time I ever had a problem at target with their coupons. I have become used to having issues with the grocery stores, but now target. I think I might have to call store managers before shopping at stores to clarify there ever changing coupon policy.

I was at Target today and the lady in front of me had tons of q's. She also had a $5 off $50 in grocery and NO GROCERIES. The cashier told her that she didn't think the register would take it because she had to buy groceries (although she did not tell her she could not use it). She turned her light on to get a manager and no one came so she scanned it anyway and the register took it. I think the cashier just wanted to get the transaction over with so she didn't argue about the no groceries.

Sometimes Target receipts are a little hard to read. In recent time I experienced that when I used a Target Coupon and a MQ the Target coupon does not appear on the receipt instead if you pay close attention you will notice that the price of the item has changed. So for example if an item is $5.00 dollars and you use a $1.00 off Target coupon the item will show on your receipt priced at $4.00 and if you stack it with a Manufacturer coupon the coupon will either appear right underneath the item or toward the bottom of the receipt. I was told that the price was automatically being adjusted to avoid people from being able to get the complete full price of the item if they decide to return it because Target coupons are store coupons and the store does not get additional revenue from them like they do with the Manufacturer coupons.

To add I have seen people return like 300 dollars of items (particularly kitchen and bathroom items) with the receipt and they had used coupons and got the full price for all the items. Sad that people take advantage and ruin things for those who honestly try to save.
