Thumbs Down Worrying Target didn't use all my coupons at checkout...

I did my very first Target couponing shopping spree today, It was pretty awesome, I had Target coupons as well as manf. Q's. I was even able to do a free wyb deal.

Anyway, I just let him ring everything, and then handed him my stack of coupons.

Is this a mistake? I'm beginning to wonder, Cause when I got my receipt, and total, it just didn't seem like I should have paid that much.

I only bought what I had coupons for, So.... *sigh* .. Idk, I just think next time, I will be alittle more cautious at the checkout lane.

*question*: Can I make the cashier scan item/scan coupon, Scan item/ scan coupon ect. so I know they're being taken off correctly... or is that a no no..?

Do you guys write down your purchases on paper with the amount that your project to pay out ahead of time? So you have an idea of what around about your total should be?

    Live and learn ....

Target has a weird coupon system when you look at the receipt...as you look down you will see an item, less a coupon price---BUT the coupon price may not actually belong to that specific item-but only the company...the Target coupon will not print with the item, rather down a little further. So, the receipt can be a little deceiving when it mis-matches coupons with items. You always want to watch the coupons ring up and off...you can ask the cashier to slow down or you can do the item by item with a coupon.

Target is one of my favorite stores...and to date; no really big or even little big problems...I have found out that if you get into negative numbers-the computer just freezes up.

As you keep doing this you will know exactly how much your total should be after coupons and before taxes...take a little calculator with you and add up as you shop...and you followed one of my greatest rules by picking a male cashier...bless their hearts!

I don't live really close to Target, so it's not one of my usual spots. I did go there a couple of weeks ago, and I was concerned that they didn't take all my coupons off. I was really confused about the way the register listed the coupons. The next time I go, I am going to add up all my coupons right before I check out to make sure I get credit for all of them. I always have a plan before I go, but due to them being out of items, or whatever, I don't always use every single one I bring.

I ALWAYS double-check my receipt when leaving Target (although as someone else mentioned, Target receipts are a big confusing when you first start de-coding them). I had a $5 coupon that was scanned, but it didn't take anything off. I have also had coupons not ring up for the right amount, and have had items ring up at an amount different than they were supposed to be.
I've never had a problem when I've brought it to the cashier's attention or to customer service, but I'm always glad I check.

Yep, I tend to do smaller transactions b/c of their wonky registers. Also, Target store coupons tend to deduct off the item, so when you look at your receipt, you think you're missing a coupon, but you're not. So say you buy something that's $1.99 and you have a .75 Target coupon, the receipt will show $1.24. Other times the Target coupon will be deducted on the bottom of your receipt, usually if the cashier has to k1 it. I also try not to buy a lot of like brand items together, like Kraft or Kimberly/Clark just b/c sometimes the coupons don't attach right or don't deduct at all.

What I do is make note on my shopping list that I"m using X # of Target Coupons & amount and X # of Manf qs and amount. That way I can compare before walking out of the store and get it corrected right away.

I do write a list of each item I'm buying, how much it costs, and then what Q's I have, how many and what my final price will be. I do this for 2 reasons, so I can budget, and so I can make sure that what I'm buying is the price I thought it would be. Since store prices vary, I don't want to go into the store thinking that a product is $2.50, and with $1.00/1 will be $1.50, just to find out that the item is $3.99 at my store. It wouldn't be worth purchasing if I wasn't getting that particular deal, so sometimes I even sit at the price check scanner before I check out just to make sure...does that make sense?
Then, since I listed out everything and it's price After Coupons, I get an idea of how much I'm going to spend, like $10.00 or something. If I'm asked to pay more, then I know right then and there instead of reading my receipt afterward and having to go to customer service.
To answer your question about when to give coupons, I usually give them to the cashier afterwards, BUT I only hand them "like" coupons, OR the 2 stackable coupons at one time and I watch the register. Giving them a few at a time makes them go slower, so you can really pay attention and If something isn't right, you can address it right there, before it's a big mess.
This last trip I took, I printed off a Target Q for $1.00/1 oral care item, and I picked up a pack of Dental Floss that was only $0.89. When I handed the cashier the Q, she let me know that when I look at my receipt, I will only see the -$0.89 because Target doesn't give overages. (I don't know if this applies to Target Q's or Mfr Q's), but anyways, this was helpful to me, and I only think she was able to tell me because I was only giving her Q's one at a time.

Target registers and coupons are really strange I agree. I had a cashier there once ask me why I was holding all my coupons and only giving him a few at a time, I told him I wanted to make sure the were all going to come off. If you don't watch sometimes a cashier at any store will just scan them and put them in their drawer, whether they deduct or not. I once asked the dollar general store to pull all of my coupons out of their drawer and cancel my order because the machine was not taking them off.
My best practice with target is to make multiple purchases, if you have to go back through the end of the line, to save $20 it's worth 5 more minutes of my time. I find that if I buy all of the same item in one order and then hand over the coupons I can ward off any problems right then and there. I've been known to put my order in my car and go back in for a second order just to limit the possibility of a mess up. I always have a list with me with prices and coupon matches with a total so that I know what my total is going to be fairly close, I can't always judge tax because it's whacky here with state and local sales taxes at weird rates depending on which section of the city I'm in.

I will add up the amount of the coupons I am using. Then get a total before handing over my coupons. Subtract the final total from the beginning total to see if anything was missed. This way I can get the missed ones scanned before I pay. Saves me alot of time but Target can get a little screwy when it comes to taxes, items are taxed after target coupon but before mfg, so the amounts are usually a few cents off.
This way if the kids throw in extra items and my total seems high,.. its not because of missed coupons

I shop at Target frequently (like almost 2 or 3 times a week sometimes...lol), since I live only a mile or so away from one. It truly has become a great place to shop with coupons, as long as I'm paying attention. I can't say there aren't frustrating times, but most of the time...when I catch an issue after checking out or during checking out it is taken care of my a manager with no rudeness. So...my advice...be detailed in your scenario before you go in (or at least have a list of each deal and add up what you did get while you walk through the store), watch the register like a hawk, smaller transactions are better, and don't be afraid to bring it to a managers attention if you feel something didn't happen. I feel most of the managers are pretty good at knowing how coupons work and how to fix a problem.

Lately, I have bumped into a couple of issues that occurred. First, I had a coupon that was a peelie on an item I bought and the cashier did not take it off and scan it. I should have paid better attention, but didn't notice it until I got home. I brought the item back in with the coupon still on it and the receipt. Customer service was great, looked at the receipt, did a little transaction in their register, took the coupon and game me a $1 with no problems or questions at all. I just know I wasn't going to be buying another of the same item before it expired and felt it was better to try this than not. :D

Second issue, a cashier ran through the coupons really fast (and not to be mean, but he had no clue what he was doing)... and I noticed a $2/1 coupon did not take. Since the this cashier only had one more person in line, I let him ring that person out and asked him if he could bring out the coupons I used from his drawer. I started to show him that a coupon was not deducted, he looked at me cluelessly...but, thankfully another cashier walked by and fixed the problem without blinking. Seriously, it was like heaven, no questions asked...she new exactly what happened and gave me my $2 in about 2 seconds flat.

So, all in all, don't be afraid to speak up and familiarizing yourself with the receipts is helpful. Happy couponing!
