Not sure if this is worth adding... New Jersey has decided that candy cannot include flour in it, so things like KitKat bars, Twix bars, Twizzlers, et cetera, are tax exempt now. Just a thought when the Halloween candy starts to come through...

As far as Illinois goes, the food tax is 1.25% (not sure about Chicago proper) and retail tax is as high as 10% in Chicago/Cook County. Forcing us not to shop where we live, that's for sure! Didn't know if you want these nitpicky bits. But there is also a seperate alcohol tax in Cook County, and I don't understand even what it is (percentage? per item?) but the new tax rate of 10% doesn't apply to cars. Also some towns have "restaurant" or take-out taxes, like Chicago proper and downtown Naperville. Crazy place to live

Default Re: Which States Have Sales Tax On Food?

While SC has no state sales tax on food, counties/cities/towns can impose a small tax of up to (I think) 3%. I cannot keep up with where charges what, it's very confusing.

Sales tax for take out and eat in foods is very high. I've seen as high as 11% in Richland county. Again, that will vary depending on what part of the state you stop in.

The tax rate for Nebraska on that site is wrong. It listed 5% and it is actually 7%
