HOT Why do manufacturers do this? Changing the spelling of a word or making a brand name that has hyphens when they aren't necessary?

I use the coupons database often. Like. every. single. day... Anyhow, I get so tired of trying to figure out how an entry might have been spelled when it should be in there and isn't.

For instance, why would Kraft spell Philadelphia Cooking Creme as c-r-e-m-e as opposed to how I spelled it to search c-r-e-a-m? I had the coupon in front of me to input and still spelled it e-a-m because that's what makes sense to me.
    • Philadelphia Cooking Creme - 03-06-11 SS $1.50/1 5/31/2011 Insert
    • Philadelphia Cooking Cream, Any (Manufacturer Coupon Redeemable at Stop & Shop logo) (DND9) $1.00/1 4/18/2011 Catalina Stop & Shop
Another example: Dannon spells Dan-o-nino with hyphens, but there are a few entries in the database as Danonino (no hyphens).
    • Danonino dairy drinks, any 4-pack - 02-27-11 SS $1.00/1 4/26/2011 Insert
    • Dan-o-nino Dannon Danonino Yogurt, any $1.00/1 6/1/2011 Other

The name I have the biggest problem with is Ro*Tel. Why in the world would a company think it is okay to add a * in a product name?
    • RoTel Diced Tomatoes, Any three $1.00/3 3/27/2011 Booklet
    • Velveeta 1lb or larger and one (1) can of Ro-tel (any variety) - (DND/T5) Guy's Game Day Playbook $1.00/2 3/31/2011 Booklet
    • Ro*tel - valid up to $1.00 B2G1 NED Other
I know that spelling isn't everyone's strong point, however it seems that manufacturers sometimes set us up for failure when they come up with creative (read: crazy) spellings. So, now, I know many people call companies by the wrong name out of habit. For instance, "Pepperidge Farm" is often referred to as "Pepperidge Farms". So, now, when I search in the coupon database, I often only enter parts of the product name and sift through results. Ok, off my

I'm cracking up about the * in Rotel!!!

It's like, Hi, the product name is Rare, but it's spelled xclslaewkhf, what??

I guess you can spell any name of a product anyway!

What about Febreze?? the word Breeze has a double e, how come Febreze does not?

the way it's spelled, it should be pronounced Fe-Bres, rhymes with "says".

    Uggh!!!

And Creme should really have the little do hicky over the first "e" - Crème

If it from Kraft and has the word Philadelphia in it, they should not pretend to be French

That would be fun -- to have a * and a è in your name, Hè*idi. But then everyone would pronounce your name wrong. LOL

Another one -- as if DiGiorno isn't hard enough to spell -- the new combo pack has Pizza and Wyngz....

Geez! They should call it Pizza & Chicken... ROFL!

They even have a link why they spell it that way: DiGiorno.com | Wyngz?

The short answer: Because they're not wings. They're even better.
Our new DIGIORNO® Pizza & Wyngz include “Wyngz” that are boneless cuts of all-white meat chicken breast, lightly breaded, and ready to bake. Now, if you're familiar with chicken anatomy, you probably already know the breast is not part of the wing. That's the reason we don't call our Wyngz… wings. And once you try them, the only thing you'll be calling them is amazing.
We're introducing two Wyngz flavors. So if you're in the mood to spice things up, the DIGIORNO Pepperoni Pizza & Buffalo Style Wyngz combo is the way to go. Feeling more like barbeque? You've got options: pop either the DIGIORNO Supreme Pizza or the Three Meat Pizza with Honey BBQ Wyngz in the oven and you'll be wynging it in no time. So expand your vocabulary and enjoy an awesome meal, with the Wyngz no one else can deliver!
