Grocery store clearance items

What is the best time of day to look for grocery store's clearance items? Most grocery stores have a certain area in the back of the store where they put this stuff, it is usually 50% off or more. Sometimes I go there, and there's nothing. Other times,there is a lot. I am not sure the best time of day or week to find these items. It seems like on the weekend, they are already picked over.

At the store near me, they stock overnight - so the early morning is the best for finding the grocery clearance stuff. The meat guys come in later so I find the best picks there to be around 9 or 10 am. The owners of all the local Chinese restraunts know this and are usually there at about the same time!! The bakery clearances in the evening and donates it all to charity at 9 am the next morning, so you have to get there early before the charity truck comes.

It probably varies by store, and I guess it never hurts to ask the employees what the best time is.
