Re: I hope this trend does not spread across the nation, I use my free paper grocery bags. I don't think I agree with an all out ban, but would be all about putting a per transaction limit on the use of non-reusable bags. I've used the reusable bags from Publix for the past two or so years every time I go to the store, it's not difficult to remember, use, or live without the plastic. I've also made them with fabric scraps using a plastic bag as a template. If the majority of shoppers recycled or reused their plastic bags, I wouldn't support this type of ban. Unfortunately, most people bring home 10-15 bags and immediately throw them out.
A limit would still allow those that use and re-use the plastics to have something for their trash can and to wrap meat so as to avoid the funky chicken juice. But would force people to look for less damaging alternatives.
Now for those that use them for diapers....when my kids were little I used a roll of ice bucket liners (from hotels) to wrap the diapers. Less plastic and very convenient, but you either have to work in the industry or be really convincing to a manager. You might also be able to work out a deal with your newspaper delivery guy to get some newspaper wrappers.
