Ikea bags are FABULOUS!!!!

Love them!

That being said...other than the bags they put the milk in...I keep each one and reuse them...either by putting them in as a garbage liner...or they get a poopy diaper thrown into them.

I don't normally bring reusable bags to the grocery store with me...cause i need the grocery sacks. Someday we will be out of diapers and it won't be a big deal to me though.

I hope it doesn't spread here either, OP. I use the reusable bags fairly often, but I don't think they should ban the plastic bags entirely. I, too, use them for trashcan liners & also in my truck for trash. I also have two dogs, so what's the difference between using an overpriced plastic poop bag at the park & a free plastic bag from CVS? Both will end up in the landfill.

IMO, they could just as easily charge a deposit like they do on bottles & cans rather than banning them entirely.

How did you get an IKEA bag? The closest Ikea to you is in TX. Or do I have the wrong store?

The California Assembly on Wednesday passed legislation prohibiting grocery stores from giving out plastic bags.
The bill also calls for

customers to be charged for using store-issued paper bags.

I accept plastic bags but ask for paper many times too for my trash can liner and to invert the bag and use it to wrap boxes for shipping. No offense to you in Ca. but I hope that law stays there and does not spread.
I agree, they can keep it. i use my plastic bags, alot and if I have ones w/ holes i take them for recycling.
But I use the plastic ones for yardsales, and when walking the dog (for her potty) min-trash liners and tons of other uses.
Yes, I know, that I can buy small bags for that and maybe use the sm. plastic bags provided along our path for the dog...but it's still a plastic made and used. i'd rather re-use.

I also reuse the plastic bags for many things like can liners, scooping out fur baby box, yard sales, etc., etc & also recycle.

I heard / read somewhere ( don't remember details ) back when all the reusable bags started hitting the stores that the stores were working their way to eliminating the plastic bags & would only carry paper or reusable bags & if you wanted a paper bag you would have to pay for it.

I know in Florida my Save-A-Lot did not supply bags you had to bring your own, buy theirs or go without. Here in Virginia they supply the bags.

Yep if the trend is to eliminate the bags then they need to make better reusables. I read an article ( don't remember where ) that the reusable bags are nothing more than a place to harbor & breed germs. Think about it; meat, cans, fruit, veggies, etc carry germs & it contaminates your reusable bag. Yuck!

When FIL died and we needed to go back for the funeral in Utah....I made darn sure I got to go to the IKEA store ...in fact it was my DD2's 1st birthday. Yup you heard that right...we spend her first birthday at IKEA ...funny thing...is that was exactly one year ago yesterday....It was her 2nd birthday yesterday.

I would assume that Texas is probably the closest though.

Yup they need to be washed a lot. I personally wouldn't put meat in them at all.

The IKEA bags can be wiped out with a lysol or clorox wipe...or even just sprayed down with lysol.

I like a combo of both, I refuse to put meat and some other foods in reuseable bags, its gross unless you are going to wash them after every use and that is kinda defeating the purpose. I don't mind spending a few cents a bag to help cut down on waste so I can use the disposable bags for my meat and some other foods. I like the reuseable bags for cans and boxes, paper goods ect.

The plastic ones are good, as mentioned, to give your yard sale buyer something to carry their purchases home in.

I cut the bottoms off the paper bags and then invert them and use it as heavy brown paper to wrap around boxes I'm shipping from Ebay sales. It really saves alot of shipping material cost.

What I dislike with the plastic ones is the way the baggers give you so many. They'll put two items in one bag when it could easily hold 4-5.
I usually get out the door, rebag my groceries to "reduce" the number of plastic bags and put the extras in the re-cycle box. Our Harris Teeter has a bin for paper recycle and plastic, so the plastic bags get recycled.

I'd hate to lose the paper bags for my shipping. I guess the charge would be nominal.

If I am buying $20 in food from my store, I'd expect them to be able to at least give me one bag to carry my stuff. It's the baggers who are wasting bags by giving out so many for a single order. I prefer and try to bag my own. I can put 6 bottles of gatorade in one bag and tie the handles in a knot. The baggers will put 2 bottles in 3 bags, and that is wasting bags.

To charge for bags reminds me of the gas stations. They want your gas money but they charge you for "air" for your tires. 50 cents or 75 cents in places.
They'll charge for water and toilet one of these days.
