| Re: 2% Food Tax starting today! With states spending beyond their means, feds spending beyond their means and they don't generate money on their own, the only place to get it is through taxes and 'fees' on people, you know, the ones who foot the bill for all the stupid waste?
Ya, be prepared, it's only just begun. They will tax everything to raise money, and they will use all sorts of excuses to do so.
There are the 'sin' taxes we've seen for years now, mostly cigarettes. But now they'll go after more common things under the guise of how taxing something will reduce usage of that item and that's good for people. yes, sugary soft drinks is being discussed in several states - why? Because they can pitch it as "bad for you" so taxing it will make you use less.
Yes. Be very prepared.

Yes. Be very prepared. | So what's the excuse for the states who have always taxed food |

And taxes on food (something necessary to live) is a cheap way out of not cutting government expenses. There is no excuse for it other than it's a grab for revenue.

| Re: 2% Food Tax starting today! Interestingly enough, in 1998, the following statement was true: Of the 45 states that levy general sales taxes, 20 apply their sales taxes to food purchased for home consumption.
Now, I wonder what that figure is today. So I looked that up: - Thirty-one states and the District of Columbia exempt most food purchased for consumption at home from the state sales tax. South Carolina is the state that most recently eliminated its sales tax on food (effective November 1, 2007).
- Seven states tax groceries at lower rates than other goods; they are Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia. [1]
- Five states — Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Oklahoma, and South Dakota— tax groceries fully but offer credits or rebates offsetting some of the taxes paid on food by some portions of the population. These credits or rebates usually are set at a flat amount per family member. The amounts and eligibility rules vary, but may be too narrow and/or insufficient to give eligible households full relief from sales taxes paid on food purchases.
- Two states continue to apply their sales tax fully to food purchased for home consumption without providing any offsetting relief for low- and moderate-income families. They are Alabama and Mississippi.
Now, we're going to see more states looking for more ways to generate revenue and things that were once sacred may no longer be.

Gotta love those "temporary" taxes! Kinda like the Johnstown Flood Tax, a 10% "temporary" tax on wine and liquor enacted in 1936 to assist with recovery and cleanup of the Johnstown Flood. The recovery took six years, and the tax is still in effect today. AND they've raised it twice....
