Default Re: How much shampoo does a person use per year? etc.

I made charts and hung them on the inside of the bathroom closet door. Each person had a chart, and it listed the things they use...shampoo, soap, deodorant, etc. There was also a chart for "family" items...toilet paper, hand soap, toothpaste, etc. When anyone got out a new item, they had to write the date on the appropriate chart. I also had a space to put the size of the bottle, since they vary. After 3 months, I was able to figure out how much we'd go through in year.

Wow thanks everyone for the great ideas. I will start writing down the dates like y'all said.
I'm one of those control-freak people who has to know exactly how much and I love making charts. I guess knowing how much supply I have of something just makes me feel more secure. :shrug7:

I hate to say it, but we are the lazy dazy ones here....lol. toothpaste, tp, deod, coke, pepsi, shampoo, etc, all these things end up for free here... soooo... i stock the heck out of it... watch expiration dates and give the excess away when the date is nearing, or a new supply comes in... (We also have a large area to stock in which helps)

Its different from person to person. My hair is down to my knees so I use a bottle of Aussie shampoo and a bottle of Aussie conditioner each week. Now my hubby doesnt have much hair these days so he may go through a bottle of his shampoo every two months. My son omg, He takes a shower after school and after work everyday. i made him start buying his own stuff. So keep a close eye on your family and how much you need then go by that.

I was told by my stylist that we as americans use too much shampoo and conditioner for our hair. instead of the usual dispensr she told me to be a dispenser that looks like a hand soap dispenser. between one- 2 pumps is good for any type hair. (long/short) I never knew that before she told me that.

Wow, my hair isn't much shorter but I go through way less product. You must have super thick hair.

Americans are very keyed to the more is better way of life. Suds don't do much when it comes to soap and yet the average person uses enough soap to see tons of bubbles. It makes us feel clean.

I definitely don't watch how much I use a year. I stock what I can fit or can get and worry about it later. Between donating and using I rotate through til I only have my favorite products as opposed to whatever was cheap/free.

I figure for two adults we go through:
6 bottles Aussie shampoo
12 bottles Pantene shampoo (or another brand)
12 bottles Pantene conditioner (or another brand)
8 tubes of toothpaste
48 rolls of Charmin Aloe&E mega rolls (we seem to use an abnormally small amount of TP) this use to be the BJs sized pack
4 bottles of Listerine the huge ones
8 toothbrushes
54 men's razor blades
52 women's blades
12 cans of women's shave gel
2 cans of mens shave gel
6 bottles of womens body wash
6 bottles of mens body wash
4 bottles of handsoap
12 tubes of antibac hand lotion from B&BW
12 bottles of body lotion
4 bottles/tubes of face wash
3 bottles of Aveeno lotion
12 bottles/boxes of bath salts/bubble bath
12 42wipe packs of butt wipes (or 6 84packs)

Anyone with kids is gonna burn through stuff like there's no tomorrow. It seems to be how it is, no matter how responsible your kids are.

It's funny this thread exists. I was just reading a post on The Dollar Stretcher about how someone wanted to make home-grown toothpaste, shampoo, laundry detergent, and deodorant (I think that was all) because the monthly costs of those items were high.

Wowzers! I've really been bad about couponing and sales recently (after many years still haven't gotten the hang of it) and even I don't think we spend much at all on the stuff. Maybe $12/month averaged over a year of the above.

A deodorant stick (Old spice...more of a solid gel) lasted me 3 months. I used the sharpie trick and wrote on the product.
I found that those sticks that are dry (more of a powder) don't tend to last as long. They're definitely cheaper (maybe that's why). So unless you get one free or extremely cheap, I don't think they're worth it, if only for the hassle factor.
I bought a couple 4-packs of old-spice from Sams. Not the cheapest, of course, but I did that a couple years ago, and I'm still pulling from the stash. I'll only buy a stick if I have a coupon that makes it free or almost free.

Shampoo a couple months at minimum (I'm a guy, very short hair, and I use the cheapo suave stuff, and my hair is just fine). My wife a little more (she likes Aussie, though, heh heh, I dumped some white Suave in her aussie bottle and she didn't notice!), plus uses conditioner (as well as my daughter).

I have a front loader, so that uses very little laundry detergent. My big tub from Sams has lasted me 15 months (for a family of 4) and this was with a binge of washing everything every day for a while when we mistakenly thought we had lice. My guess is the new tub (which I bought Saturday) will last me 18 months barring any lice epidemics. And my clothes come out nice and clean.

Other stuff we use as well, but I don't think we spend too much on soap, hand cremes, mouthwashes, etc. And I could do better if I actually remembered to clip a couple coupons, or bothered to pay attention to the Walgreens sales.

-Mike

If i only used that small of amount I would not be able to get a comb through my hair. My hair is very thick and long. If I don't wash it every day it looks like i poured grease on it. So my hair gets washed 6 or 7 times a week. And depending on how hard I worked that day it might get washed twice a day. Aussie Bottles arent that big to start out with anyways.

Bodywash can last me around 2-3 months but if DBF gets ahold of it - poof its gone! He must use enough bodywash for a elephant! Shampoo's take a couple of months but conditioner doesn't last long with me. Whoever said their stylist recommended a small amount would NEVER work for me. I have long, naturally curly hair so a dab of conditioner wouldn't get the tangles out.

Default Re: How much shampoo does a person use per year? etc.

for me...
I go through twice as much shampoo as conditioner and shampoo lasts me about 2 months a bottle - 4 months conditioner
toothpaste DH and I share and go through a tube a month roughly
he goes through a can of shaving cream in a month - 6 weeks it seems, I go through less than a can a year cause I hardly ever shave except under my arms and then I just use soap/body wash
body wash I use about a bottle a month
face wash takes me about 6 months as well as face moisturizer
deodorant, 3-4 months with solids and less with the rollons or gels(probably 2 months w/ those_
....
