| Re: What is your weekly grocery budget per person? I am all over the place. My "budget" is $50 a week on food and hba/household stuff. This doesn't include prescriptions and non-prescription medication because we use our FSA for that and there is a lot of them.
I range anywhere from $30 a week to $125 a week depending on what is going on. We have a family of 5-one teenager, one almost teenage boy and a toddler who is on a special diet now. In the summer we have a lot of fresh veggies so less money gets spent there but I tend to buy things like soda and chips and lunch items for the kids that I don't have to buy during the school year. Rebates definitely help stretch the $.

We're a family of 4 and have a dog and a cat. Our grocery shopping is based on how often we need to fill up our gas tank that week. For example, last week, we spent $24 on gas had $57 left for groceries. This week, we spent $51 on gas (we both had to fill up our cars) and had $30 left for groceries. We have $2.46 left for today and tomorrow. We refill the $$ envelope on Saturday morning.
I only grocery shop for staples and deals each week and fill in the rest from my stockpile. It works out well and really helps me run errands/grocery shop only once per week, which means I drive less. Milk, eggs, fresh fruits and veggies are our top priority and then I shop the sales. I am still able to add to my stockpile by shopping loss leaders and combining coupons with sale items. I like this system and I have found that I stay home a lot more now that we have implemented it! | That seems like a great system you have there. I wish I could be that disciplined. I always spend way more than I want to. Example, went to Food lion for a 4 dollar pizza, came out spending 41 bucks.
I have heard about the envelope idea, I am going to try to bring that into my form of budgeting. Way to go!!

I have heard about the envelope idea, I am going to try to bring that into my form of budgeting. Way to go!! | Thank you! We are fairly new to the system, but it had really worked so far. There is something about spending cash that really makes you think twice about purchases and also makes you realize that great sales will come around again. I used to really stock up when great sales hit. Now I can stock up some (usually enough for 3-4 months depending on the sale), but have scaled back quite a bit. For me, stockpiling was becoming like a second job!
I also like combining gas and grocery/household shopping because I stay home a lot more because of not wanting to use the gas. I used to fill up my gas tank once per week, and now I can go 2-3 weeks before filling up because I only run errands once per week. It makes a huge difference in terms of time and money. I also find that I am much less stressed, which is a great thing! The kids and I still go out and do things, but we will go for a walk, play outside, have friends over or just make a quick trip to the library or visit a local animal farm (both free and about 5 minutes by car). |

| Re: What is your weekly grocery budget per person? Family of 6...right now we are probably doing 100-200 a week. I have very few options store wise out here...and it's not worth driving for 2 hours to get to a store that would double (the only option would be Kmart...and obviously they only do it occasionally and have very little food options there).
I'm going to be looking at the angel food ministries...or a co op here (haven't found one yet) and I'm on a mission to buy a 1/4th of a cow and fill my freezer with it.
With add matching and coupons I can bring down my bill about $60 dollars, but that's probably going to be about it. |
