    QUESTION "$x.xx/x, ANY" help

What do you do when the coupon for "$x.xx/x ANY" doesn't go through?

What I mean is... umm... how about an example?

I have the 1.00/1 ANY Tide Coupon and grab the .97 trial-sized Tide. The register says that "the item is not found." Therefore, the cashier rejects it. What should I do/say?

Today I couldn't do the Ritz/Triscuit/Wheat Thins deal at CVS because the "item not found" message came up, then the cashier insisted that it was meant to be used on the bigger sizes because the pictures were of the bigger boxes.

I did notice that the 1.00/1 Suave Lotion Q went through fine at WalMart, but not Target (again, the "item not found" message). Is it just their registers' system?

Each time that message came up, I explained that there were no size exclusions. The cashier would read it, but then insist/make up something because of the picture, or just simply say that I CAN'T do that as if I committed some sort of crime. What have you guys done about it?

    :) TIA.

Well to begin with, you can explain that coupons go by the wording not the picture. If the wording says ANY and does not say EXCLUDES trial size, etc then it is fine. Perhaps save an expired coupon that does exclude trial size to show them the difference?
Also you can explain that they may need to adjust the coupon value to 97 cents since the item is not $1.

All you can do is explain what "any" means and ask them to correct the price down. It may be that they don't do any overage and that's creating the problem. If they won't adjust, call a manager over. If the manager won't do it, you'll just have to shop elsewhere.

Hmm... well I've offered the cashier those advices already... is it possible to manually input the coupon if the item is obviously there but when scanned, reads, "item not found"?

The issue is in the coding of the coupon, simply put the coupons are not coded to work on the trial sizes so they will always beep or come up "item not found". The Suave coupons should always go through because (again) of the way they are coded.
My suggestions is simple, explain to the cashier what the coupon says & what to do about adjusting it. If they won't budge ask for the manager, if the manager won't budge let them know you are using the coupon as intended by the manufacturer and completely legally and that you will be calling corporate about the issue. Make sure you either call right there (if your not too flustered already) or at least take down the names of the cashier & manager and call when you get to the car or home. MAKE SURE YOU CALL, no one is better off if you don't call - employees & managers need to be educated about coupon usage it's good for you & I as well as the stores & manufacturers - everyone wins when we use coupons the right way.

Thanks for everyone's help. :) I will most definitely call up the manager or corporate. I hope I'm not too flustered to do so! I'm not a very confrontational person...

    Hi,
The other thing I would suggest is to obtain each company's coupon acceptance policy by e-mailing their corporate office. I have done this and carry copies of the e-mail in my coupon binder when I shop. I recently had a cashier claim I could not use a store coupon combined w/ a manu. coupon. Luckily I had the corporate policy and was able to show her that WAS the company's policy.

In your situation, simply e-mail the corporate office and ask about the specific policy for coupons being used for trial sizes.

HTH, good luck and keep us posted! :-)
