I have a Sams and Bj's nearby. I used to go to them, but the membership fees were not worth the savings.
I have now narrowed my shopping to CVS/Walgreens, Publix/Albertsons and the local farm store for veggies and fruits. :)

At my grocery store they have a roll of Paper Towels for 89cents. isn't that a good deal? What can you recommend I do to pay less? For that brand of Paper towels they have no coupons.... any comments would be appreciated.

No it isn't a good deal --- for me. I pay nothing or get overage.

If that brand has no coupons, don't buy that brand. Brand loyalty costs you.

Stockpile when it's cheap.

It's actually a very simple concept, but one that most people have trouble understanding. Stockpile.

If you go to the market every week and buy the same things, most of those weeks you are paying full price. Even if you use coupons, you are paying full price minus the coupon price. That's more than sale price many times.

Consider this: Before I started using coupons, I was a stockpiler. If there was a good sale - and I knew my prices then better than I know them now - I bought enough to last until the next sale. If you can't keep track in your head, write down when your stores have huge sales on things. Write down the price. You'll see a pattern. If it's every 3 months, buy enough to last 3 months --- or a little more if you can. Don't buy something else you want/need in order to be able to buy enough.

Tada!! Your first stockpile item.
Do it over with other items. Pretty soon, you'll have enough stockpile that you never HAVE to go shopping except for basics: milk/dairy, meat (unless you have a freezer), produce. But that doesn't mean you stop shopping. It means you now only buy what has a short shelf-life and new stockpile items - or replacement stockpile items.

I have enough tp to last a year and a half - and I paid either nothing or got overage. Combine sales, coupons, and hopefully a catalina deal and you've got it - FREE!! or darned close - pennies a roll. Now when I think of replacing stockpile item, I don't buy at a good sale price. I wait - I can wait for almost 18 months - and I keep my eye on the stockpile - and even if it's not down much, if it's overage, I get it. Free, I might pass it up. I can afford to be picky now.

I haven't gotten shampoo (free) in almost 6 months - and I'll probably pass up the next sale too - unless it's "better than free" - then I'll donate what I have and keep the new.

Read the newbie threads. Read them again - especially the stockpiling ones. Pay attention to your sales patterns; note your best prices.

No room for stockpile? think again. Read the threads on where to put your stockpile.

Then, go slow. It won't happen overnight. I was stockpiling for 30 years before I figured out how to get multiple coupons without buying a ton of newspapers.

Good luck

I have a question - where is everyone getting free paper towels and TP? I am not totally new to couponing, but am new to "extreme" couponing and have never been able to find TP or paper towels for free. Also, I got floss for free about 1 yr ago (still using it up, but running low) but cannot find any more free floss deals. I'm almost about to pay for it. Are some things just regional? I only have Walgreens, Rite Aid, Safeway, Luckys (used to be Albertsons) close by. Target is here but I don't like to make the drive. What stores is everyone getting the great deals at? Also, I have never seen a store double coupons in my area.

A few weeks ago, Viva was free at ShopRite and Marcal had a free coupon in the inserts - pt, tp, tissues. I got free tp at CVS last winter - can't remember the deal. Yes, some of the free deals are regional - some areas of the country do not double. Keep your eye on Walgreens. When they put out the $5/$20 specific day of the week coupon, grab your dental floss then - combine it with another deal that you are getting free after RR. If you play it right, you can get it free/almost free.

Thanks for the tip! I've been using the $5/$20 to get overage (which I could use to buy dental floss!) but I guess I can play it to buy things that I actually need instead. Never looked at it that way!

Also, my Walgreens has the shorter ad which is 8 pages instead of the 16 or 20 page one, which sucks. I just found out that the RR deals are still good even though they aren't advertised in our ad.

I also find it very hard to find free/cheap food items. They do come by sometimes but they are rare!

Anyone else in the Bay Area, CA feel my pain?

I still haven't been able to stockpile to much .
The best I have done is
Free totino's pizza roll when it was on sale 10/10 but I was only able to get 4 coupons of the net
Free Barber chicken when it was 10/10 but again I was only able to get 2 coupons off the net
Free mustard when it was 10/10 and I had a .50 that they doubled so free

Cheerio's I was able to get Walmart to match Kmart when they had it for 1.88 and I had 3 /1.00 so .88 cents a piece

Other than that I don't know how to score more q's because I only get the paper and what I can print on the net

I cannot dumpster dive as our recycle bins are totally in accessable
I also am not able to buy them

So I have been trying to trade and swap but its slow because I am a newbie .

Plus the stores around here change their prices as often as the gas station changes theirs .

I hear you. I live in LOND and it sucks. I still get HBA items pretty cheap, but kind of gave up on food items I actually eat. We don't eat too much processed food, and not very many coupons are available for meat, veges, etc. around here. (I'm in Sac area in Nor Cal.)

Things I get free or really cheap are:
Toothpaste
Toothbrush
Shampoo
Conditioner
Body wash
Razor
Shaving cream
Hair styling products
Cereal
Snack
Soda
Kleenex
House cleaning products
Soap
Dish soap/Dish washer soap
Tylenol
Excedrin
Deodorant
Band aid
Baby lotion
Feminine products

As pp said, use any possiible overages towards items you actually need.
Look for the Don't Pay For That! thread, it'll give you a good idea of what can be had free most of the time (via sales cycles). There's also a Sales Cycles thread that details much of the "regular" cycles. Once you get the idea of stockpiling when it is free down, then master the thought of not paying for the Don't Pay For That items (mostly HBA), that $$ can then go towards the food, etc you can't get deals on.
Think about what you were spendng retail on HBA and cleaning supplies. You can get all that free. It's quite a savings to the budget.
And if you find a good overage repeat it to the max. Someone here noted it well. She really didn't need 200 tubes of KY (didn't need any actually) but for every one she got, it took $1.07 off something else. If I could have gotten in on that one I'd have 200 tubes too!

You can also check out Ebay, thecouponclippers.com, taylortownpreview.com (she's also a clipping service), etc. I've found that those services, combined with HCW trading are much more economical than actually buying a newspaper around here. The paper is $1.50 and the most clipping services charge for a regular q (not a hot one) is about 10 cents. I'd have to find 15 q's out of the paper every week and around here I usually don't. Except for P&G week.

Thanks for the info the only problem I have is my dh doesn't want me to buy coupons off the internet ...so I will only be able to trade coupons and or swap them here ..
