There aren't a lot of coupons for school supplies, but there are some AWESOME sales and they are starting now. Keep your eyes on the drugstore, target/walmart type store, and office supply store ads. You will be able to get certain items for very low prices.

One thing you may have to do is to substitute cheap supplies for what the teacher's list indicates. For example, instead of one giant glue stick for $1.99, you will probably be able to get 3 smaller glue sticks for 10 cents each....the amount of glue is the same, but the big sticks don't usually get really cheap. Also, if the teacher asks for the 16 pack of crayons buy the 24 pack and toss the extra 8 if you need to. The 24 packs are the ones that will go on sale for 25 cents or less. Instead of a 1 1/2 inch binder ($5ish), get 2 1 inch binders when they go on sale 2 for $1. If the teacher wants a 4 subject notebook (150 pages for $3.29) get 2 single subject notebooks (70 pages each = 140 pages at 10 cents each = 20 cents) and glue in sheets of cardstock for dividers, or just get 4 single notebooks for 40 cents and have room for doodling.

Of course, the actual prices you have to pay may vary based on which stores you have in the area, but the items that go REALLY cheap are generally very predictable. These are the ones I can think of off the top of my head
  • glue sticks
  • cheap plastic rulers
  • 24 pack crayons
  • 12 pack colored pencils
  • small scissors
  • 8 pack of markers -- washable aren't as easy to get dirt cheap
  • erasers
  • pens
  • pencils
  • 1 or 1/2 inch binders but not usually anything bigger
  • pocket folders
  • filler paper
  • one subject notebooks
If you have something that can work as a backpack for the first few weeks of school wait until they go on clearance after school starts to get a new one. While you are at it, buy one for next year if the deal is good enough.

There is a sale on paper and folders at Walgreens I believe next week. Look at the previews for the sales flyers and you'll find some good deals.

Last year the school coupons were Bic (any product pens, pencils, markers, white out) Post-it and Kleenex. That was from memory, maybe there were some more I am forgetting about. Staples has penny sales each year...I got folders, pencils, sharpeners, erasers, rulers and more for a penny each. Walgreens also usually has coupons in their weekly ads, often cheaper than Wally world or Target. I second buying 24 packs of crayons instead of 16. They are cheaper every year.

You are right---there are coupons from Walgreens. I didn't think of that because we didn't get a walgreens here until October last year.

Elmer's usually puts out coupons, as does Post it. The best way to load up on school supplies is to hit the clearance sales. Buy what you absolutely have to have to get started, then hit the clearance for next year's stuff.

Staples is a great place because of their penny sales, but be careful when you're there. Those sales are loss leaders and they're designed to get you in the door so you'll buy the other stuff there too. Don't fall prey!
